Does acid reflux feel different?

Recommended Posts

I've had heartburn before. Not often, but I know what it feels like. I have been experiencing mild discomfort in my stomach for the past month (I'm 2m post op). At first I thought it was hunger because that's what it felt like, it most often occurs when my stomach is empty and it was removed by eating. But now I'm wondering if acid reflux just feels different, or if I have a problem with gas in my stomach, because sometimes burping helps. I've been trying to be a little more regular with my gas x strips, and I've started throwing in the occasional heartburn med ontop of the PPI my doctor gave me. It's still there. Not all the time, but I can't seem to get rid of it.

Can anyone chime in?

Did your surgeon prescribe a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) antacid medication post-op?

That's what mine did (he prescribed Protonix) -- and BOY did it make a difference!

I took it only four months post-op, and then went back to my old reflux medicine, Ranitidine, which works fine now. (FHI, I'm now 18 months post-op, have reached goal, and am maintaining easily.)

I agree with this completely! This is what mine now feels like. Prior to surgery, it was higher, more acidy with belching and a burning. After surgery, it's now at my sternum and just achy almost. I've found after taking antiacids, it goes away, so believe, like you, that this is what it is. Not sure if due to smaller stomach, the pain feels diff and is in a diff location or what, but I agree....the sounds of yours is what I experience as well.

I was having something very similar and just this past Monday my primary Dr switched my PPI to Protonix. This new med has pretty much wiped out any acid issues I was having.

I was taking Omeprazole, now I take pantoprazole. My surgeon never shows up to my appointments and I've seen a lady doctor I don't like. She said it was because I wasn't eating enough Protein at Breakfast. I knew she was full of shit, but i tried it anyway, and it didn't help. I went to my PCP who I love, and he switched out my PPI. Seems to have helped a little, but not a lot. Been trying those new alca seltzer chewables of Calcium carbonate and simethicone (gas-x active ingredient).

Nothing seems to get rid of it. It seems to be worse when my stomach is empty. I woke up with it today.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
