Hi Everyone!

I'm just curious about how many of you were able to have your band removed and converted to a sleeve in one surgery or if you had to have two separate surgeries. Also, did any of your surgeons say they have a preference? My surgeon says he prefers to complete everything in one surgery assuming they're are no complications or major scar tissue. Thanks for your feedback and experiences!

I have my surgery Scheduled on the 25th, and all I can think about is if I will wake up sleeved or not... it seriously is draining me that this is all I think about!!! I have two little ones, and preparing for this surgery has been one hell of a process. I feel like if I wake up and they weren't able to Sleeve me, I will feel defeated and just frustrated. Don't get me wrong, I understand the whole idea of two surgeries and of course want what is safe. Just praying one and done is what is in my future!!!!!

I feel the same as both of you. Sometimes I wonder what am I thinking by doing this.

My doctor said the 2 week liquid diet is key. All liquids for me. I'm sure each surgeon is different.

He wont know till he gets in there if it can be done as a one and done.

I had my band removed in one day as an ambulatory surgery. In at 11am, home by 4pm (I even went shopping immediately after). I was mostly sore where the port was removed. Had my band removed 8/31 and was sleeved 10/26.

Interesting! So for those of you who just had the band removed, did you go home the same day? I assumed I'd have to spend the night if this was the case.

I had my lapband since January 2013. I had major complications due to slippage and I had it replace. I still had major complications so my insurance approved my revision. I had my surgery done in one day. My scar tissue was minimum considering I was banded twice. It's definitely the surgeon's preference whether it will take two surgeries. I didn't want two surgeries so I found a surgeon who was willing to do it in one. If I had major scar tissue then two surgeries would be needed. I was sleeved December 22, 2015 and I must say I feel wonderful

So far I'm 20 pounds down!

I had the lap band surgery in 2007 without insurance coverage paid cash, went home the same day. I had the lap band removed in 2015,had United Healthcare cover it and stayed one night. My daughter had the sleeve, had United Healthcare cover it and stayed one night.

I'm thinking it's possibly an insurance requirement partly

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. As long as you have coverage for bariatric surgery I don't think it's required to have two surgeries

Mine was done in one surgery. There wasn't anything wrong with my band. They just couldn't get it filled to the right spot where I would lose weight. I was either throwing up everything or gaining when they would take out fill. My insurance would pay for the sleeve so I switched.

My surgeon normally does them all in one surgery unless there is a reason when he gets in there that he can't. I didn't have any complications or problems.

Thanks so much for the replies! My surgeon said it should be just one surgery, but I want to be mentally prepares for whatever the outcome. It's just been stressful becauzd only my husband and therapist know what's going on. It's really nice to share on here with people that have been through or are going through the same situation. I just want to move on with my life, you know?

Buy a cold compress bag (the type you fill with ice)and an electric heating pad.I had the all in one revision with hernia repair .though but worth it.

I had mine in 1 surgery. Surgery was a little over and hour , and I went home the next morning . Best thing I have ever done for myself. Have lost 65 pounds since June.

JenPen, I am being revised on Tuesday March 1st! I have had my band for almost 10 years! My original surgeon who has been doing bariatric surgery since the early 2000's does them in one. I went and consulted a doctor for insurance reasons and he does them in two steps and you have to do his entire program(see only his nut and shrink), he told me that a revision in two step is the GOLD-STANDARD! I walked out of the office because of an incompetent Insurance coordinator. That's another story. So I AM A NURSE for 27 years and when somebody start talking to you about GOLD STANDARD, I was like what???? So I called 10 top BARIATRIC teaching hospitals. I am in Oregon I started w/OHSU - (actually sent them the records the chair looked at my case and said he would revise me in 1 step), Then I called 9 other hospitals, OHSU, Stanford, Brigham's, Cleveland, Mayo, Duke, Enloe, etc. So 8 of the 10 revise them in one step. It really has to do with how your doctor was trained. It was interesting because I spoke to an another Nurse coordinator and she told me she had been to the International Bariatric Conference and one step sleeves were more of the norm across the board. Even though her docs do them in a 2 step process with 8 months in between! She also, said her docs are having such success with sleeves that they are not even performing RNY!

So everyone has an opinion about which is the best one or two steps. But as you can see I went to the EXPERTS and asked. But when you see the doctor he will explain why he does it one way or the other. Because of insurance issues I am having to travel 5.5 hours away. So I really am hoping to be able to be done in one step!

So I had my band done in 2006. No issues until April of last years(except my port broke in 2013) But I have lost 132 pounds with my band. So stay tuned and I will try to update it here.
