Now I know why people lose weight with this band

Recommended Posts

Well like I said, I'm still in the getting to know you period, yesterday and today I had salad with chicken and it went down okay. Like everyone always says..I took my time and took small bites, and everything was okay. I had about 1/4 cup, so I think the amount of the fill is just right.

As I'm sure all of you encountered, its just trial and error about what goes through easily and what doesnt...I just find it funny!!

I am still pre-op and this may sound strange, but I WANT my band to hate bread. I want it to hate Pasta and tortillas and cake and all the carby goodness that got me to 300 pounds to begin with. That way I will not want it, I will perhaps even fear it a little, and lose all desire to consume it.

Also ..what is "sliming"? I have read the term before, my doctor never mentioned it. It sounds uumm bad ..and gross.

Sliming is really the precursor to a PB. You get that lump in your chest or pain in your stomach, whatever your own personal signal is that something is stuck-ish. YOu feel the pressure. Then you start to salivate profusely, and becuase something is stuck enough that nothing is going through, you cant swallow the saliva as it worsens the pain. So you have to spit spit spit.

Sliming to me is not something I could hide, I have to go and bend over and just spit. It may as well be a PB.

I can get a little stuck and as long as I dont take another bite till its gone I'm fine. Sliming for me happens when I take the bites (even small and well chewed) too close together. I get four bites in before I realise that the first one is causing problems.

Uh. ya, it is gross...and thats what this entire thread is about....getting to know what goes through and how slow you have to eat so that it does go through. And whatever you do, dont drink anything when you have that stuck feeling....it just doenst go through the band and then liquid and whatever else is in there comes up...

I've spent a lot of time in the bathroom the last few days...I'm so scared to eat anything, the only thing that goes through right now is Soup. I'm okay with it...I guess this is what its all about...but be prepared to be over the toilet quite a bit until you get to know what you can eat or not..

HI Folks,

I have to treat my fills like the initial procedure. He wants me on clear for 2 days, liquid for 2 days, mushies for 3 to 4 days. If I am able to eat solid after the 7th day, I can continue, but if I am too tight, back to Clear liquids. Seemed to work for me!

Good luck on your journey!!

Do you think eating ice cream everyweek-end 1/2 gallon will damage the ban? I do it and nothing happens but slow to no weight loss?

That's a LOT OF ICE CREAM---how many calories in that whole thing? it won't damage the band--but boy--that's probably making up for all the calories you are NOT getting in "real" food, like Protein, vegetables and fruit!

could you cut down on the ice cream? i bet your weight loss will get a good jumpstart!

Take your time, eat as if you're trying to swallow ground glass and I found the MOST important thing for me to do is not the tiny bites and chewing but its WAITING between bites. Wait for a minute, give the food time to make your stomach and see how it sits before you take another bite. This is what I find hard. Nobody notices the small bites and lots of chewing but when you just sit and dont touch your plate, they comment. And if you're eating during your lunch hour etc, it can be bloody inconvenient to take so long at it. But you have to wait between bites.

I find I can get 4 bites of food in and swallowed before I realise the first one is not going down right and then its too late to do anything about it, the golf ball feeling and sliming are inevitable.

Great suggestion! that is the first I heard that one. It makes sence. If something isn't going agree with you and you've eatten most of your food before you realize it, it too late. Thank YOU :clap2:

Usually the doc will let you know that breads a bit hard to pass through the band. I have been banded for almost a year I have tried all sorts of varieties of breads and nothing seemed until I stopped at a Greek restaurant and tried some pita bread and it actually went down fine

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
