Switch to RNY? Due to Hernia/Reflux

Recommended Posts

My doctor expressed to me that she has to fix a hernia and therefore thinks that it would be better to do RNY. She states I have acid reflux of which I have no symptoms. I am highly anemic and RNY sometimes makes this issue even worse. I have been looking up that if they repair the hernia you have a 40 percent chance of having acid reflux/feed. I was wondering if any people have had similar issues? I do feel that gastric sleeve is right for me do to age, non-malabsorption, and somewhat slower weight loss. I have read many many stories with long term gastric bypass due to malabsorption. Thanks for your time.

I meant GERD not feed lol.

Hi there! I was in exactly the same position as you. I had very good reasons for opting for the sleeve, but received a call from the surgeon a week before surgery. Although I had no problems with acid reflux, she saw a small hernia in the pre-op swallow test. She strongly urged me to opt for the bypass, stating she would likely have to do a revision a year or so down the road because of GERD.

I ultimately went with the sleeve and hernia repair. I've had no reflux/GERD, zero complications and have lost 127 lbs in 10 months, surpassing the surgeon's prediction by 13.6 pounds so far.

I'm not saying this is typical, but it is my personal experience. I wish you well!

@@megpie22, you really should discuss all the options with your surgeon. I opted for the sleeve because I have longtime anemia problems and was worried about absorption of my psychiatric meds. I originally was looking into the bypass because there is more long-term info available and patients tend to lose slightly more weight. :D

Hello! I had a sleeve and hernia repair on 12/16. I've only had extremely minor reflux issues in the past and had no issues for about a year before surgery. I did have pretty strong gas/acid pain in my chest and back for a couple weeks after surgery, but it's about gone now. I don't know if it'll get worse in the future or not. I hope not!

My dr told me she would not approve me for RNY due to anemia and other Vitamin deficiencies. I had to be cleared by my neuro to make sure they were all on the same page. So, I think that lines up with how you're feeling. Are you able to get a second opinion? The sleeve can be done as an open procedure thought they don't like doing it. I had my galbladder removed not any hernia issues. So, that part, I'm not familiar with.

I'm getting the sleeve with a moderate hernia repair. I've had issues with gerd.. Thought I was having a heart attack once or twice.

My doctor said there is a slight chance for a revision but will probably be on a acid reducer forever.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
