Tell me about odd weight loss patterns

Recommended Posts

I am only 5 weeks post op.

During pre op I lost 13 lbs.

In the 5 weeks since surgery I've lost 23 lbs, for a total loss of 36 lbs.

I am not freaking out about a stall. I am already noticing a trend that I haven't seen addressed or been able to find and was wondering if anyone else had something similar.

It seems like I lose 3 to 5 lbs in a week, then lose nothing for a week (or .5 a lb in a week). This has been going on since the first week after surgery. The first week I lost 12 lbs (I was very sick). It's so peculiar to me.

Did anyone elses body be so weird? I am sitting at the same weight for 8 days now. I know stalls are normal and necessary, but every other week?

Its not weird. None of us lose at a constant, steady, or predictable rate. Our bodies are complex systems and not simple machines. There is a lot that goes into making our bodies smaller besides just what shows up on the scale, especially if we want the weight loss to be permanent. If the numbers on the scale are going to drive you crazy then I recommend that you weigh infrequently.

Thanks for replying. It's not making me crazy, I've just not seen anyone else say anything similar. At first I thought I was stalling every other week but I don't think that's right. I think it's just the way I am going to lose and wanted to know if anyone experienced losing this way as well. I'd like to know if they did lose this way does it continue like this?

I do the same now. I'm almost 4 months out but for the last 2 months, I lose 3-5, then nothing for several days, then boom, down a few more. It's a weird process but I just roll with it.

Thanks. That helps. It feels just weird to me! I change nothing from week to week. The first week it happened I was like what the heck! My 3 weeks stall came early. Then it happened again and I was like seriously... I've see so many posts on stalling, and I am fully aware that can still easily happen at any time. I've seen people who feel like they lose slow, or even fast, but not this funky every other week pattern!

Oh yeah. I seemed to stall every few weeks. I really liked it when the scale would go up a pound and THEN I'd stall.

Good times.

I creep up a pound then back down then down a pound or two then nothing for a week or two then drop three in a week. that's normal for me. your pattern is similar.

Jane, that's what I do! Randomly drop down a pound or 2, then up 1, nothing a few days then boom, down 3. A weird pattern but it's mine and I'm used to it now.

Thank you for posting this Hope and Agony! I have surgery next Monday and now I have more knowledge about what might happen.

I'm actually relieved to read your post! I'm 4 weeks post op and have lost 17 pounds (I lost an additional 30 pounds during pre-op). It sounds like I am "on track" so to speak. I've been trying to focus on my nutrition first and calories second without giving much credence to the scale. But that's hard. I have been stalling too. But there does seem to be a sort of rhythm to it. Congratulations on the weight loss. It sounds like you are doing great!

I have a weird pattern too!!! I will lose for a week, week and a half then nothing for a week. It has happened since I was about 2 months out. I think my body needs that rest period to get going. Last week I lost three and half pounds, this week I am up half a pound. I work out 6 days a week and eat almost the same thing everyday, so I know it is not my diet or that I am off track. Just my body doing its part to rest and get ready for the next week.

I think you have seen from the responses here that it's not weird at all, but perfectly normal. Most people's loss if graphed looks more like a stair step pattern than a strait line.

After my surgery, on 8/17, I purposely did not weight myself until my first post-op appt. I knew I would be swollen, etc. and I had read about the 3 week stall. I thought I would give you my weekly weights and show you how I've lost. It certainly hasn't been consistent, but overall I am very pleased.

Seven months out for me and my body LOVES this game! Not really a "stall" as I do keep losing minimally, but then, BANG! 3 lbs all at once. I only weigh once a week now and it is easier to take the wacky ups and downs for me.

You all literally just made my christmas! I am 7 weeks post op and I have lost 25lbs which under normal circumstances would be amazing but I was feeling like such a failure. Good to know I am not the only one!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
