PCOS and cramps from the depths of Hell

Recommended Posts

Hello ladies!

I had my RNY almost 4 months ago and I've lost almost 70 pounds since then. Part of the reason I chose RNY is because it has been shown to reduce the symptoms of PCOS more than any other weight loss surgery, and the thought of my awful symptoms reducing is incredibly appealing to me.

My question here today is 3-fold: Did any of you with PCOS notice a change in your symptoms for the better or worse? How far out were you when these changes began? Did your PCOS affect your weight loss in any way?

I've had two periods and one really weird spotting incident since surgery. Both periods have been painful beyond anything I've experienced. I woke up this morning with the distinct feeling that someone is rubbing a cheese grater against the inside of my uterus. I'm hormonal, weepy, and craving huge amounts of food for the first time since surgery (which I obviously cannot, nor do I want to, give in to). I also believe my stall, which has been going on for 2 weeks, is from my strange hormone imbalances. I have an appointment with my PCOS specialist in just a few days, but I would really like to hear some of your experiences. This is so, SO not fun at all. :(

Thanks for listening to me whine. I hope some of you can offer me some advice or experiences.

@@Cervidae - sorry I can't help you with the PCOS. I just had very heavy florida periods and could easily go up 6-7 pounds during the days leading up to the actual start. I cramped sometimes.

heating pad and some otc "girl meds" ???

@@jane13 I'm currently sitting with a heating pad, which seems to help a bit, but I seem to remember my surgeon saying "no midol" so I'm not even sure what I could take that would actually help this. What do you take? When you gain some pounds, does it feel like Water weight? Or it is your hormones being crazy and are you actually gaining weight?

I have PCOS and endometrial hyperplasia. The doctor gave me birth control to regulate my hormones. Since my wls I decided to quit the hormones for a couple of months to see what happens. So far I have had one period from hell (as I usually do). The cramps were so intense I felt like my uterus was going to explode at any second. 2 weeks after my period I got a very weird, very dark brown spotting. Asked my gyno about it, said I shouldn't worry. Just my body trying to regulate itself and old leftover stuff coming out.

For the cramps I take either advil (ibuprofen) or anaprox. Both have worked wonders. Usually advil is enough for me and Anaprox is prescribed. Important note, do not take advil and anaprox at the same time. I was told to take Tylenol in between advil OR anaprox if I still had pain but I have never needed to resort to that.

EDIT: oh also, first week after wls my skin was all lovely and clear. Now I am also getting breakouts from hell also from the change in my hormones..

I have PCOS and have had it for 10 years that I know of. I've been in an out of ERs for ruptured cysts on my ovaries, I've tried almost every birth control to get my hormones under control, I've also taken Metformin for a big part of those 10 years. I am 6 weeks post sleeve now. I bled after surgery (I think everyone does) for almost a week. I got the brown discharge 2 weeks later. My period came about 4 days ago and the cramps and bleeding have been usual. Yes, it hurts but it's nothing compared to a cysts. I've got a heating pad but I really miss my Sassafras tea :( Overall I haven't noticed a chance yet in my PCOS except that my facial hair growth has slowed down.

I hope your cramps get better!

For the cramps I take either advil (ibuprofen) or anaprox.

DO NOT TAKE NSAIDS! Advil is an NSAID. The only over the counter med you can take are Tylenol and off brand Tylenol. If you need something for cramps talk to your OB and don't choose something that could be very hazardous for your new guts.

I have PCOS. A month after surgery my period started... a month later it hadn't stopped. I got a full check up and my OB put me on hormones to regulate my periods. I did not however get put on birth control. Please remember you have to wait to get pregnant so if you aren't on the pill please use some other form of protection. I use a heating pad and while the idea sucks, more exercise. usually lighter stretches and then meditation to relax the muscles.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
