Do all Doctors require two week liquid preop diet?

Recommended Posts

I think your pre-op diet depends on your surgeon and what weight you are going into surgery. I was only req'd to be on a liquid diet 1 day prior to my surgery. Thank God, because I hated that one day after about 5:30 p.m. I was told just to start following the diet of 2 Protein shakes and a sensible microwave dinner to drop a few pounds before surgery. I must admit this whole process has been rather easy for me, which is another reason I definitely think I should have had the surgery. SW - 271 Surg Weight -257 CW -243

Mine only requires 3 days liquid diet. I started a healthy 1200 calorie diet on my own about two weeks before surgery. Then the 3 day liquid diet.

My surgeon just says not to eat the night before (and a few foods I should stop a week before like curry etc)

No preop diet here. Was just told to eat light day before and not have anything after midnight.

I'm just starting out but it was stressed in our seminar that all of my doctor's patients are required to do a two week pre-op liquid diet (Protein drinks). Not only that, but we are required to buy the HMR shakes from them for the two week pre-op diet and one week post op for a cost of $260 out of pocket (Not billable to insurance). That was a little surprising to me but I'm okay with it because I know it will all be worth it in the end.

I can understand them insisting on you doing liquids, but making you buy them only from then sounds a lot like a scam.

I thought that at first and did call and question about it. The practice manager said that they just made this policy a year ago because the surgeon feels that these are the absolute best quality shakes for bariatrics. After your 1st week post op they don't mind if you switch to something that you like better though. If he didn't come so highly recommended I would have more hesitation. :)

Is that brand of shake only available in your doctor's practice? If not then I still say scam. I don't have a problem with them saying 'buy only this one', it's more 'buy them only from us'.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
