Any September bandsters out there???

Recommended Posts

I won't know how much more wieght I have to lose untill I see the doctor Sept. 25. I weigh 416lbs and I am 6" tall. My bmi is 56. I was told two months ago when I first started this process that I would need to lose 40 - 50 lbs. I hoping I won't have to lose more than 20 - 30 more since I've lost 17 already. That may take me another two months. I'll let you know what he says.

I've been giving this "pre-op weight loss" concept some thought.

I think doctors want to see that you are motiviated to lose the weight, in general, before they put you through the surgery process. I say this for several reasons, the most important of which is that my doctor has done thousands of these, and he simply does not require a pre-op diet, at least not for banding. So do the math (so to speak). If our bmi is over 50, it may be that they have professional experience which tells them to be sure that the patient is motivated to see the process through, before they do surgery, with a test of motivation, i.e., a diet. I've heard all the yada-yada about dieting to reduce the size of the liver before surgery, but as I understand it, one of the 5 holes in my stomach was put there to insert the tool to push the liver away from the stomach. In other words, so what if it's fat. Jus' sayin'.

but what the hell do i know.

Good luck to you, and God Bless US.

greg

I am scheduled for my surgery on September 28th. I'm very nervous.. Any pre surgery tips. What do I need to expect???

I was soooo nervous before my surgery. I stressed out sooo much! After I had my band (Sep. 6th) I was shocked to see how easy it was and have had almost no complications at all. I am sooo glad I got this done and have never regreted it! Just relax, it will be much easier than you think and when it is all over you will wonder why you didn't have this sooner!!!:car: Good luck!!!

Brenda,

Welcome and good luck on your surgery Wednesday. My surgery is Monday. I'm really excited too. I have so much to do this weekend that I'm hoping I won't have time to get nervous. We'll have to compare notes.

Hi everyone

My husband and I were banded on the 20th and home the next day. We're both doing very well except for the gas in my left shoulder. I'm so glad we did this for ourselves and wish everyone luck.

Hey Kellymovingon -

good luck monday - let me know how it goes! I see we are similar ages (I didn't post mine originally) - love to hear how your progress is doing -

Are you on a pre-op diet? My doc wants 2 meals liquid/day and 1 regular meal. I had a few parties to go to, and I was so surprised how I was able to not snack! I didn't sit AT the table where all the food was (which was where I normally would be). I just mingled everywhere else. Getting into the mindset of not "what can I eat now" has been half the battle. I can't wait to surprise people at my weightloss during the holidays this year!!

Good luck to everyone else getting banded next week :

Kellymovinon, legalmandy,supermamaof4,marywalker20,rachel1972,libby,chelle, and say a prayer for me too - luv2laugh....

Brenda

surgery date 9/26 - gettin' nervous!

Brenda,

Thanks and good luck to you on Wednesday. My doc requires an overnight stay at the hospital, so I won't be home until Tuesday afternoon, but I'll check in when I get home.

I didn't have any special diet since I had lost weight during my 6 month medically supervised weight loss program. I would have had to do a liquid diet if I had gained, but luckily I stayed the same weight. I say luckily because for about 4 days after they submitted my paperwork to insurance, I was a bottomless pit. On the 5th day, that all changed and I went back to eating better.

Wow - so much has happened since I was banded. I am taking notes and writing it all down! Kellymovingon, thanks for keeping up for me! You all are doing so wonderful!

I was banded on 9/19 and had a problem with nausea. I am doing much better. Make sure to walk walk walk. That will help so much. I got to have yogurt this morning and it tasted so good! I have lost 12 pounds since last wednesday! I feel great! I hope you all have great success as well!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
