Tube down the throat during surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am a newbie at this forum and being banded on August 7 - YAH!!!!

I am from Ontario.

I have a question for those who have had surgery already. Do they put the tube down your throat during surgery? I had that done when I had my tubes tied and they said it was to make sure nothing got lodged in my throat while I was under. (Fillings, crowns, caps etc).

It hurt my they do the same during lapband surgery .

Thanks

Yes, LapBand surgery is done under a general anesthesia, you will be intubated (tube down the trachea) or have some sort of an oral airway that goes into the back of the throat.

It is not for fillings, crowns, caps (though protecting those things from going in an airway is a consideration), it is to secure your airway so you can be ventilated during surgery. Anesthesia also uses inhaled gases and these are administered via this tube. It also protects the airway from any reflux up from the stomach getting into the lungs. You are given a muscle blocker and must be ventilated via a machine suring general anesthesia, therefore a secure airway must be in place.

Thanks so much for explaining that! I read your posts here all the time and they are very useful. The nurse during my tubal ligation said that the tube was so nothing gets stuck in my airways and i don't choke while I am under.

The reason I asked this was because the airway tube site gave me a very sore throat for several days...almost hurt as much as the surgery! LOL

I was banded on 6/21 and they used a tube for the anesthesia. I had a cough for two weeks after which I assumed was from the irritation from the tube. In fact it is just going away.

Well thanks for explaining. I was very uncomfortable with the sore throat for quite a while and just wanted to know what to expect.

Yes most use the intubation tube so you get air while under anethesia.

Some use a small nasal mask. Mine did. Friend had the tube and they broke his tooth. Bummer.

I had a tube as well. They put it in after I was out and took it out prior to waking me up so I have no recollection of it at all. I guess I was one of the lucky ones because my throat never hurt afterwards. The only thing different that day was that my voice was a little raspy.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
