Leak failed to heal. Now having surgery

So I have had a leak for 6 months. They put in a stent and a drain and a swallow study yesterday showed the leak was WORSE!!! My doctor has decided to do a complete gastrectomy. I am terrified but it seems like I have no other option if I want a normal life back. I doubt anyone on here has had this happen but anyone who has, support would be great.

I pray you have a safe recovery keep us posted

What were your symptoms of a leak? I'm so sorry you are going through this its a scary thing I'm most afraid of this but have been feeling some discomfort when eating and drinking. Do you know what caused it?

They are going to take out your whole stomach? What are they going to replace it? Intestine? Will you feel full with the replacement? Will you need a feeding tube.

You poor thing

Sorry I'm a nosy nanny.

Yes whole stomach. They pull the small intestine up and stitch it to the esophagus. I talked to people who have had it. My understanding is that it works much like a by pass doesd

My leak just happened. Nothing caused it. The symptoms were pain in my shoulder and stomach. I also went septic so I had a fever too

I won't need a feeding tube. I will be able to eat. Just small amounts and I have to learn what makes me sick and what doesn't.

I am recovering slowly. The attachment point had a small leak so I couldn't eat for 3 weeks and I in fact did have and still do have a feeding tube. I just found out yesterday the leak is healed and they started me on liquids. The cramping is pretty painful but I am told it will go away in time. Overall I am improving but it is slow going.

OMG you poor thing.

oh no, it (a leak) happened again! Was it the same Dr that did the WLS that did this new one? I am so sorry you have gone through so much with these surgery. I looked at your profile and didn't see your location or pounds lost. Yes the pounds lost is great but at what expense? It is time to change your profile to show the weight loss. Did all these problems happen in the USA?
