Protein intake

Recommended Posts

I am 13 days post up. I tried different brand of Protein shake but they are disgusting and taste terrible.

Tomorrow I will start puree phase and planing to force my self with Protein Shake.< /p>

Just one question, since I didn't get Protein in the past two weeks, will this affect me health wise? You know like increase the risk of leak or I am not ready for puree phase or something like that?

@@khaled,

Most of us struggle in the first couple of weeks with Protein. The important thing to understand is that you must have Protein to heal so you need to get after that asap.

I had a similiar issue until I found one I really like. I use Premier Protein ready made shakes. They actually taste pretty good and they don't have that overly strong taste of Protein powder. Because they are premade, you also don't get the grit.

You can buy them at costco or Sam's and some Walgreens have them in smaller packs.

Also Syntrax nectar in the grab and go packs are better than most as well. The fuzzy naval flavor and the caribbean cooler is excellent made with Water. The vanilla bean torte made with milk is very good too but you need to use a cup with a shaker ball.

I hope you find a solution that works for you because besides Water, protein is very very critical to your health.

Good luck!

No I haven't tried premier shakes. I hear everyone say they are the best.

Depending on what flavor you like...I am pre-op and love vanilla premier shake with sugar free caramel Syrup. I could seriously live on this...I also love caramel. There are many different sugar free flavors available...just put it in the vanilla shake and drink it cold. My dietitian also told me to use MIO and Crystal Light if I want some fruity flavors instead of my caramel.

The short answer to your question is you can run a Protein deficit for six weeks or so without major heath consequences. They body adapts but usually with lots of hair falling out ;-(. But that's not where you want to be. So keep trying shake mixes, or get some genpro and mix it in with yogurt and your puree. Tasteless and it dissolves well.

I don't know that you can have banana yet but when you can, I had someone suggest this and just tried it and Oh My Gosh was it good! - Vanilla Protein powder (or Premier Protein vanilla shake), Orange Crush Water Enhancer (like Crystal Light - in the same area in the store) and a small bit of banana (I used about 1 oz but I am not a huge fan of bananas). Highly recommend it! I don't know that I could drink it everyday, but it was a wonderful treat. Also, have you used PB2? I mix a small amount of PB2 (like 1/2 Tbsp) with a chocolate shake and it is really good too.

I haven't experimented much with mixes, but I am starting too because at almost 9 weeks out, I am still struggling to get in enough Protein from food. There are a lot of good recipes out there. Check out this link if you haven't seen this website yet. She has some wonderful recipes!

Hope that helps! And as others said, most people don't get in all their protein in the first few weeks. It takes a while to work up to it. Just keep trying and stay hydrated above all!

I love chocolate shake with a banana and a tablespoon of Peanut Butter. Blend with ice in blender and YUM! What is PB2? I've seen a few people mention it.

@@Dawn306 - it is a powdered Peanut Butter. http://www.bellplantation.com/4-pack-pb2-powdered-peanut-butter-6-5-oz-jars.html

You can get it at Target (other places too I'm sure - including Amazon).

im hoping that people aren't making Protein shakes with Peanut Butter and bananas in the early stages of post surgery. That's a lot of sugar. Bananas are loaded with sugars and so is most Peanut Butter. I used to ( stopped last week) snack on all natural peanut butter with only peanuts and salt as the ingredients, the kind you have to stir before you use it to reincorporate the natural oils. but its an easy way to increase your carb and sugar load as well. Use this honeymoon period to your advantage, trust me once this slows down, your going to dream about being back in the honeymoon phase.

Dont waste it.

Also for Protein shake information, check out the video section of this site. I and others have posted a lot of

taste test video for you to watch. I will be adding some more soon as syntax is sending me some specially made samples of the new , Naturals, line of Protein mixes. For now my new favorite is 1 scoop of syntax latte Cappuccino, 6 ounces of skim milk, 1 teaspoon of PB2 chocolate, and 4 ice cubes, blend and enjoy. tastes like a peanut butter cup with a little coffee kicker. Its a wonderful shake on a warm day. Also the fuzzy navel with Water , some strawberries and pineapple is great but i limit that to only one day a week as a pre-workout due to the sugars in the fruit.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
