Exercise Question--How Soon after Surgery

Recommended Posts

I've been reading a ton about VSG surgery and exercise.

Most of what I have read pertains to going from sedentary to starting an exercise routine in conjunction with a pre-surgery diet, so you have a foundation post surgery. I haven't seen a lot of information pertaining to those that are already pretty active.

Even though I have a desk job, I am pretty active already and work out 3-4 days a week on my own and once a week with my trainer. I've been doing this about 2 1/2 years now.

My question is, how long before I can really get back to exercising like that after surgery?

I know it is different for everyone, but is there a ballpark?

I talked to my trainer yesterday and mentioned that I might be having this surgery, hopefully within the next few months. He said that he could work around anything we needed to--just to let him know what any limitations are.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

My doctor said 6 weeks. You have to be careful not to disrupt your internal stitches.

Whenever your surgeon gives you clearance. Depends on exactly what you want to do, light cardio is going to usually be cleared a lot sooner than, say, weightlifting. Most surgeons will want you to wait 6 weeks or so before weight lifting or doing serious core work, or even cardio that involves a lot abs. But only your surgeon can tell you for sure.

I'm dying to get back to Water aerobics classes, myself. I'm about 6 1/2 weeks post-op, and figure it would be okay, but I'm too nervous to go without the official OK from my surgeon's office! I actually called today, but the PA isn't in until next week, when I have an appointment anyway.

I was cleared to get into the water after my incisions had closed over with no scabs or holes.

I was cleared to get into the Water after my incisions had closed over with no scabs or holes.

At my one-week post-op appointment, the PA said that my incisions need to be "completely healed"--whatever that means. I would have asked for clarification at my one-month appointment, but I had to cancel it because of a family medical emergency that took me out of state for two weeks.

Everything is closed up, and my scabs are gone, but the incision lines are still red and feel kinda bumpy underneath. I dunno. Better safe than sorry. I just need to grit my teeth, deal with the heat/humidity we're having, and go walking to get my exercise for a few more days.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
