Beware And Be Aware-those Who Take Bp Meds!!!

Recommended Posts

I bought a digital wrist cuff, I think from the drugstore, or even from the grocery store. I assumed it was probably not all THAT accurate, but it actually was.

Great thread, thanks. I was just banded yesterday but lost 15 pounds on the pre-op diet. I will keep a close eye on it. My tachycardia (fast heartrate) is definitely already much better!

Thank you so much for this warning.

I take three pills a day for HBP, so it will be good to go over this with my PCP after surgery for her to keep a good eye on it.

Those on a lot of meds should also keep in touch with their regular doctor or as in my case, my diabetes doctor. Am closely monitoring by sugar levels as went off one medication before surgery and my blood levels are normal...but I have 4 other meds to get off and you don't want to be driving when your blood surar drops !

I was banded on 5-23. I was aware that there would eventually need to be some adjustments done on my various meds, including the three (Toprol, Diovan, Aceon) taken for blood pressure. However, I figured it would be after a substantial weight loss. I was wrong. I began being light headed this weekend, my sight was "vivid" and strange, I had "speckles" like before you pass out...I didn't feel "right". I attributed it to being hungry, but it didn't go away after I ate...I made the MISTAKE of driving 34 miles to my house Sunday and I should NOT have. Nothing happened, but several times I thought I might have to pull over to the side of the road. Because I was not "quite right" I was only partially aware that I was taking a big chance. I took my BP when I got home and it was about 62/46 on my cuff (which I assumed was wrong). Took it several more times and it was always below 90/60. Got up yesterday to go to work, and instead took only my Toprol. Even THAT was too much. BP through the day was extremely low, I was dizzy, speckles in the vision, etc. Went to the company nurse for confirmation and I was 88/50. Called my doctor and they fit me in immediately. I was heavily overdosed on my meds. I was cut back from 3 pills a day (including 100mg Toprol) to 50mg Toprol ONLY... My doctor said that you can need an adjustment after only a ten pound weight loss. (I have only lost about 20). Word to the wise folks on BP meds....be very aware of your reaction to your meds and stay in close touch with your GP. My situation could have easily been a disaster...passing out in the car, passing out at home or work and falling, etc.

I had similair thing happen after I got the band. I'm on 3 BP meds. I'd only lost about ten pounds. Everytime I stood up, after a 1/2 minute or so, I'd get so light headed and dizzy that I had to lean against a wall to keep from fainting. My PCP said my BP was way too low. He cut my meds in half. I hear that BP too low is real dangerous.

Thanks for this thread!! I was on 3 b/p meds twice a day, now I'm down to 2 once a day...Also if you are on cholestrol, triglyceride or diabetic medications, don't forget about blood work. These change quickly too... Good luck to all of us!!!

Glad you did...The same thing happened to me. I suffered with the dizzies for about a month before I realized that my bp could be too low. When I had it checked it was in the 90s/60s. My doctor took me off my meds except for the one bp med to control my Migraines. We are playing with that one because I still get light headed sometimes. Great thread and info.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
