So I finally start mushy foods on Friday. CAN. NOT. WAIT! I think I am going to try fat free refried Beans with cheese first! I have been craving it for 3 weeks.

I am terrified of dumping. Have obviously not had the issue on liquids. My question is - will I know pretty immediately after trying a food if that is not going to be right for me? (Does that question make sense? i.e. should I stay close to home the first few days and/or anytime I try something new?)

Secondly, I know we should add foods slowly so we know which food it is that causes issues but is that like only trying 1 new item per day or just 1 item per each time I eat?

Hi! Congrats on your progress! My doctor and NUT both told me that dumping can vary from almost immediately to 3 or 4 hours. The other night I had some chopped up grilled chicken breast and just a small cube or two of potato mixed in kind of like a hash. I had 2 or 3 bites and was finished eating and felt fine. I sprang out of bed at 2:30 in the morning with what felt like gas pain...the same pain that I had 2 days post op. That "gas" turned in diarrhea. Well turns out it was a form of dumping. I felt bad the entire day. Of course my doctor said I was lucky because I didn't have the FULL effect of dumping syndrome. Needless to say, no more potato. Now for trying foods...you should eat them one at a time (one meal) to see if your body can tolerate it. Otherwise, if you get sick you wont know what made you sick. Once you are sure you can tolerate it then you would be safe to combine them. Good luck!

So what are the foods most likely to cause dumping--besides the obvious high sugar/fatty? I'm terrified of this as well

I've read that some experienced dumping from eating fried food. I was told that once I'm reintroducing my body to something, to just eat a little bit and then wait it out to see if there's a reaction. So far, so good. I haven't experienced dumping yet, and I want it to stay that way.

I was absolutely terrified of dumping. I stayed away from everything I knew could cause it in the beginning. Anything fatty or sugary was my goal.

At about 4 months I started to try things like a bite of potato or something sweet. everytime I eat BBQ Sauce I immediately get sick to my stomach but have never thrown up nor got the diahrea from it. Also when I have tried bread, it makes me very uncomfortable do I steer clear of it as well.

Now, I will tell you that I have learned what happens when you overeat by even 1 single bite. It is not fun fat all. You need to take your time, chew extremely well and listen to your new stomach. If you are full do not take that next bite.

I will also tell you that I do get sick from artificial sweeteners so I stay away. If i do use sugar, I use the real think in very tiny amounts.

It can take a while to appear or can happen right away. I'm not sure how it decides that! lol

I didn't experience it for quite a while no matter what but I do now (am a year and a half out). I don't get diarhea at all but my heart starts racing, I sweat a bit and then I get that horrible pain/ache in my stomach area that can be very debilitating and takes my breath away!! It almost drops me to my knees. It's very uncomfortable.

I haven't experienced dumping yet but I have experienced that one bite to many! I don't get a full feeling so I don't know when to stop! So now I just stop after 4 or 5 bites now matter what!

Orange juice made me throw up immediately... Other things have just made me feel horrible like a hard boiled egg that didn't go down well and broccoli was horrible ... No worries from potato.. So it seems you have to listen to your body

Agreed try only one at a time try Beans then the cheese on them another time if you do fine. It's much easier to track what your tummy does and doesn't like! Good luck!

Awesome post, lots of great advice and tips, ao thank you! I've started on Soups, Tomato and squash were fantastic. Felt like I was having a 5 star restaurant meal lol Yesterday I ventured into brocolli and cheddar soup.....I was in the restroom within 5min of being done!!!!!! And this morning I had a few more teaspoons and back to the toilet immediately! So broccoli and cheddar Soup is out! Luckily, my experience in dumping wasn't as hardcore as I've read. I just had immediate diarrhea, but no sweating, stomach pains, trembling, heart racing, etc. just some grumbling in the tummy and I knew what was happening. Lol I'm gonna puree some Beans this weekend and see how it goes!

I have several food allergies so dumping syndrome (I call it IBS-D) is not new for me. One of my worst episodes was at the Magic Kingdom when I drank a fruit smoothie. I was trying to avoid dairy, which is a major trigger for me. But it was LOADED with sugar. I started to sweat heavily, get dizzy, cramp up, and had to run to the restroom. TMI Warning: I had explosive diarreah. After about 30 minutes in the bathroom, I thought it was safe to walk across the park to first aid to get some Immodium. I finally felt better about an hour later.

I've also experienced something similar when I eat MSG, which is in a lot of chinese food. Within 10-15 minutes, I'm running to the bathroom.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
