Hi,

I'm new to this. I was recently diagonsed with Type2 diabetic and my A1C was 8 and now I'm on metamorphin 500mg once a day and my doc told me to take a blood preasure medicine, though my preasure was normal, but said that you need to coz preasure meds need to be taken when diabetic.

I would like to please know if anybody who has had the sleeve surgery, been able to totally be diabetic free and off meds. Has the A1C become normal and if so, how long would it be, before you see results. I am extremely worried, coz both my parents are diabetic and my parents have been insulin dependent for a few decades, so I dont know if it is genetic and will ever go away.

How long is it advisable to take time off work ? coz I dont have leave since I just started a new job. My job is not very hectic coz I have a desk job and do my work in the computer all day.

I do not have my surgery date yet and dont know what to expect, though this website has been extremely helpful to get more insight or knowledge into what to expect and what not to.

Any response, would be greatly appreciated!

@Cannonbaby- Good thinking. I did not even think about it that it would take around 3-4months before checking the blood sugar. I wonder if they want my A1C to be normal before the surgery? coz nobody mentioned about it. So I guess in my next visit I plan to ask the NP about this.

You should do some shopping around for your Vitamins, unless, of course, the are prescription strength, and you have to have them filled at a pharmacy. Check into Amazon.com for bulk quantities, and generic versions.

As far as after the surgery, unless you have complications, you should be up and running within a week or two. Everyone heals differently and at their own speed. You will find yourself weak, cold, generally unhappy about typical first-time experiences as a bariatric patient, but this will pass. You might even want our stomach back, but it is gone for good. Read the posts about what people experience after the surgery, that will help you mentally prepare.

Prior to the surgery you will want to get all the things you'll need for afterwards. sugar-free popsicles will be helpful to have on hand for before and after the surgery. LOTS of them! Your tastes will probably change after the surgery, so do yourself a favor and don't get huge quantities of shakes. They may taste terrible after the surgery. Instead, get a few of several varieties so you can see which ones you will like.

Get a TON of unflavored Protein powder (again, you can get this on Amazon if you can't find it locally), you can add it to Soup, broth, any type of liquid. I prefer making my own drinks with it as opposed to the pre-made shakes. Get some Water Enhancer drops in lots of flavors (you can even mix up the flavors!), for me, these were a life-saver, as I use them just to get my quota of water in. Then I add the unflavored Protein Powder and my powdered calcium citrate and my Benefiber to it to make my "cocktail". Benefiber (I use Shopko brand, and there are other cheaper brands,a s well) is, for me, essential to keep things regular. Metamucil will just fill you up, according to my NUT, so I won't use that.

I ate a lot of baby food in the pureed stage, all three stages, as I progressed. The prunes really help in regularity. The leftover jars I donated to a food bank. They LOVE getting that!

YOu may wish to get a heating pad for the soreness around your incisions. Other things you might want to have on hand (because you won't want to go out to shop right away) are Kleenex for the "sad" days, a teddy bear for said days, some really good movies, a couple of new hobbies to keep your hands busy when you think you're hungry, and a cople of books on the surgery. Again, Amazon carries those, as well.

Follow your nutritionist's instructions when it comes to post-op diet. I wasn't allowed baby food (not that I would have wanted it anyway!).

My A1c was always very high, I was on two types of insulin, long acting & fast acting. I am not taking as much insulin as pre-surgery, but still need to use it every day. My family doctor said that it does take some people longer to come off meds, it seems to be more related to the weight loss. I can definitely relate to the worry of family members having the disease. My father died at age 55 of Type 1 related complications and my brother died at age 54 of Type 2 related complications, along with some other issues. My primary reason for the decision was to hopefully put diabetes in permanent remission! Good luck to all my fellow diabetic sleevers!! Let's kick Type 2 diabetes in the butt!!!

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as well, back on march 4th at my last appointment with he anesthesiologist. They postponed my surgery until I got my sugars levelled out. My A1C was 9 at the time. It was all so new to me and extremely frightening to me because I am getting the surgery for the same reasons you are. At this time also, my mother is going through lots of issues with her body which was mainly caused by obesity and sedentary lifestyle she had when she was younger. She has kidney issues, heart disease, of course type 2 diabetes, etc...

For these reasons I am determined to get this surgery done to prevent these type of things from happening to me when I'm older. Of course there are so many other things that could happen to me in the meantime that could affect my health but this I can do something about NOW!

I have a date now(June 8th) but and also on a cancellation list as well. So hoping and praying I get it sooner than later!

I too am doing this for the very same reasons you mentioned. One question I would like to ask you, is that do the A1C need to be normal before your surgery ? or coz I am not paying a lot of attention to my sugar nos right now, but kinda eating healthy, and one day is the cheat day in a week., though my weight has not really dropped down a lot. I do not have my surgery date yet and have not yet met my surgeon either. I believe once my psyciatric doc gives thumps up, I get to see the surgeon as I was told by my NP. I have BCBS for my insurance and I dont know if there is any specifi requirements, coz my NP didnt tell that to me either except that there is 90day waiting period.

I cant wait for my surgery to get done. I also dont know if my weight needs to drop a few before my surgery. Please let me know how things go for you:)

I have my daily sugars are between 7-8 and I am cleared for my surgery now. I haven't had another A1C since march 4th but she mentioned it should be between 6-7. She also mentioned that the surgery will most likley take care of my diabetes.

It's really exciting thinking about the changes that are going to happen to us!!! Happy you have made the decision to have the surgery!

I too am type 2 diabetic. I have seen Dr., nut, exercise specialist, counselor, and am one month into the 3 month 1200 cal. Diet. I have BCBS. I haven't asked about meds. I take a lot. I go back June 2nd. I will have more questions than before. I didn't know what to ask. I have BP, diabetes, degenerative discs in my back and 1 more knee surgery to go. I hope my weight loss will help. I also have stress incontinence, osteoarthritis, but no heart trouble. I'm praying for improvement in all. Good luck on your journeys. I'm a type 1 diabetic and have had it for 42 years. It has wreaked havoc on my body because I didn't do my very best to control it at all times. I have heart disease (1 coronary stent 5 years ago), retinopathy and have to see my retina specialist doctor every 3 months as I have retinal hemorrhages and other damage, stage 3B renal failure, neuropathy (no feeling from my toes to my knees and tingling in other parts), etc. I could go on and on. I also let myself become obese which didn't help my situation. I was sleeved on May 20th and since then my A1c's have been 6.1 and 6.2 due to my modest weight loss (45 lbs so far) and my very strict new way of eating. My usual A1c's averaged 8-10 and sometimes higher, which ruined my organs and body. I will always have to take insulin, but my dosage has come down so much (I take long and short acting insulin) that my endocrinologist is beside himself with this news. I feel so much better both physically and mentally because I now feel like I'm not on death's doorstep. I'm thrilled with my new life and lifestyle and wish I took control of this year's ago. Take your diabetes (type 1 & 2) seriously. You can save your own life!

I was on 4 metformin a day - and still had what seemed to me, higher blood sugars. between 130 and 150. Stopped meds 2 days before surgery.

My last A1c before surgery was 6.5, and at one month post op on no medication it was 6.0. I am hoping that by 3-6 months I will be able to drop the diabetes diagnosis completely!

This was my main motivation for surgery.

I am also on BP meds, and they have been cut in half with excellent BP.

my blood sugar was 280 before surgery. it is now 110 3 months out . it was worth it just for that
