VSG and a Hernia Repair

Recommended Posts

I would like to know how many people have had VSG and a hernia repair and how you are doing after surgery. Did you suffer from acid reflux or GERD prior to surgery? Did it come back after surgery?

Please tell me your story.

Thank you to all reply!!

I will be looking forward to info to this question as well:). Had my EGD today and it revealed a hiatal hernia which will be repaired during VSG, hopefully in May.

I had Both surgeries done and I had a very easy recovery. No pain meds after the first 12 hours or so. The hernia has not come back but it has only been 5 months. :)

I had the same results. I have GERD and I'm hoping to hear people say once their hernia was repaired the GERD did not return. Hopefully it's not wishful thinking.

Very mild reflux. I haven't had any since surgery.

My hernia was a SURPRISE, so was repaired at the time of surgery. No issues to date, but then again, I had no hernia issues prior to surgery, either. Didn't even know it was there. But apparently she was a good sized one, and took awhile to fix. The only thing was after the surgery, taking Water was very difficult, and sometimes it still is. So we take care of that by drinking warm (not hot) water 1st thing in the morning, so as to not shock the already contracted tummy, and eating a couple of bites of soft food before eating anything hard or crunchy, to sort of "prime" the tummy for other foods. I've been told it will take about a year for my hernia to fully heal, and to not lift anything over 10lbs until cleared, again about a year. Good luck to you all....

I had hernia repair at same time as VSG.

I did have GERD before surgery and was on 1 Omeraprazole a day. At my 1 week check-up my surgeon increased my dosage to 2 per day because I was having a lot of stomach acid causing me to have foaming saliva and I was having stomach spasms. I stopped using Protein drinks and powders containing artificial sugar and I stopped eating foods (yogurt, Jello, popsicles, etc.) with artificial sugars and the frothy, foamy saliva problem went away and my stomach feels a lot better. I am not sure if it's because of the increased dose of Omeraprazole or not.

Anyway, she wants me to take the increased dose for 3 months and then she will re-evaluate me.

I have no pain at all from the surgery.

I had a hernia repair at the same time as the sleeve surgery. I had no symptoms prior to the surgery, I had no idea I even had one. No problems after surgery either. I'm 9 days post surgery and it's been surprising easy. I had one day of pain in my stomach but no issues from the hernia repair.

I had severe GERD before surgery. I was sleeved March 30 with a Hiatal Hernia repair. I have had no reflux since surgery and I never went a day without reflux before. My only issue was the repair actually caused me a fair amount of chest pain and I would darn near pass out when I hiccuped

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
