I've been barely getting my Water in most days post-op, which was disappointing, because I was a BIG water drinker pre-op. For years and years I had been drinking 14-16 cups of water a day after having cut out soda.

I always brought a 32 ounce Rubbermaid bottle with me pretty much everywhere I went. Pre-op, I would fill the bottle with ice and water in the morning and then refill it in the drinking fountain at work in the afternoons. Well, post-op I was barely making it halfway through the first bottle by the end of the work day.

I finally decided the problem was temperature. I have no trouble drinking hot beverages like tea and coffee post op and I have no problem drinking ice water, but anything in between is just hard for me to drink anymore. So once the ice in my bottle had melted and the water became more room-temperature, I didn't want to drink it. It seemed like it stuck in my throat.

I got a new double-walled stainless steel bottle and started using it today. It has made such a HUGE difference! It's only 24 ounces instead of 32, but by lunch time I'd already refilled it and had to refill it again this afternoon! The ice from this morning is still there, maybe about half-way melted, but it's enough to keep the water from the drinking fountain nice and cold.

Why didn't I do this sooner!?!?

A good friend of mine, who has lost over 120 after being sleeved, told me she has to use a straw, or she cannot get the Water in. She has been using a straw since the beginning. I feel like we have to do what works for us post op to get our fluids in. My surgeon allows straws 3 weeks out.

I am like you....i like my Water cold. I have a BUBBA jug.... bought it at Walmart. It is 52 oz. I stop at a convenient store in the morning (free ice) and I sip on it all day. There is always ice in it at the end of the day. I make a big glass when I go to bed (I drink Water all night)......there is always ice still in it in the morning. Although I found I drink more water when I drink water straight out of a regular water bottle. I don't know why but I chug it down and I get in more water than sipping. I am very fortunate that my boss's wife had surgery a year before I did...he insisted that I get a refrigerator for my office......and I am glad that I did.

You only drink 8 oz of water a day? That seems dangerously low. Are you incredibly dehydrated?

What is it that you experience when trying to drink water that makes it hard for you? For me, I felt like it was sitting my my esophagus and not going down. And I only had that sensation when I tried drinking room-temp water. I don't have that with ice water.

@@Eclectick - Try tea. I even like plain Water with lemon heated up. You really need to play around with it and figure out a way to get more fluids in. Dilute it 50/50 apple juice if you have to. Otherwise you will get dehydrated. Not getting in enough fluids can also slow down your weight loss.

I made peace with the fact that I will never drink 8 cups of Water a day. I didn't pre sleeve and now almost 7 months later....still don't. I give it my best effort every day and move on. Thankfully, I've had no adverse reactions. I do drink Decaf coffee and skim, lactose free milk.

I am struggling with Water intake lately too. Oddly I can't drink ice Water nearly as easily and it seems to affect something like a closing up of my gut when I do sometimes. I'm fine with slightly less chilled water, hot beverages, and such - but I'm seldom moved to want those. Hot tea yes, but a cup or so - it's not something i'm inclined to drink a whole big thermos of.

I"m trying to do those flavored drops in water that's less chilled, and that seems to help some. And yes, sometimes a straw if just what I need, especially in a venti passion iced (tiny bit of ice!) tea at Starbucks. :)

@@JamieLogical I have just never been a Fluid drinker, I drank-drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning and believe it or not I used to and still can go all day without another Fluid. I'm just not thirsty and when I get busy at work...drinking something NEVER enters my brain.

I know I need to drink more, a lot more....I know I am dehydrated..but I think I am past the mark where they would hospitalize me...I am feel good and perhaps that's why I am at a stand still with weight..I went from tight 24's to loose 18's and that is where I have been.

My boyfriend suggested getting one of those hats with straws attached to bottles and keep it in my mouth and suck at all times....lol

I don't know what to do....again, I try to force myself..but I'm just not thirsty at all.

I tried putting a little bit of sugar free crystal light lemonaide in Water and I can drink that...but only when I am thirsty.

Please help :(

@@Eclectick I think the best thing would be to find something that tastes good to you to the point where you would WANT to drink it, even if you aren't really thirsty, and of course keep a bottle beside you at all times. Just pick the bottle up and take a sip every few minutes. Eventually I'd think it would become a habit.

My husband is like you. He barely drinks anything ever. He hasn't had this surgery (he's a normal weight), but the entire time I've known him, he has just never been thirsty. He drinks maybe one cup of Water (mostly with dinner) the entire evening when we're home from work? He'll occasionally drink hot chocolate or chai, but he treats it as more of a "snack" than a drink, if that makes any sense? When we're out and about or on a long car trip, he will go hours and hours and hours without drinking anything. I guess some people just don't require as much Fluid as others?

My body responds better when I drink Water. I typically get between 4 -6 glasses a day sometimes more in the summer. I never had an issue drinking Water in terms of taste but pre surgery I had terrible bladder frequency and more than 4 -6 glasses a day would have me peeing on myself or close to it. However I notice when I drink water I don't have trouble with Constipation. I also try to keep my urine pale yellow so if I see it's getting dark I drink up.

I don't have any special tricks to drinking more. I just make it a point to do so. I carry a water bottle at all times and just make it a point to drink. If I'm home I site with the bottle next to me. There are times I crave it ice cold but most times it really doesn't matter the temp.

I will certainly try it, since I can take hot beverages but cannot drink water.

@@Justoperated I ended up drinking 7 cups of Water just while I was at work yesterday! A BIG improvement over the 2 cups I'd be getting in while at work before. I am super excited. I think that, counting coffee, I managed to get in something like 13 cups of Fluid yesterday! How awesome is that?

I hate the taste of Water and have a huge problem get in "water" so I had to call my doctor cause it was concerning for me. They insisted that it didn't have to be Water it just needed to be fluids. Something with low sodium and no sugar. I'm taking that and running with it. I can not drink anything warm which I notice a lot of people saying they can not handle cold. It 75% ice and 15% the drink.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
