TAKING ORAL MEDS POST-OP

Recommended Posts

HELP!!!

I take 11 morning meds and 2 evening meds orally. I'm really stressing about being post-op and trying to take my meds. A few of them I can do without, but the majority are essential. I'm hoping that some of them I can switch to liquid or sublingual, but what about the others? I know I can crush some, but, UGH!!! Is there anyone out there that is taking multiple oral meds and how are you doing it? Thanks so much for any input or suggestions!

PLEASE HELP!!!

I have not had my surgery yet but am waiting for approval. I had my pre-op meeting with my surgeon yesterday and she said that I would be able to take all of my smaller pills with small sips of liquid. I would advise checking with your doctor.

I take 11 pills each morning, and have not had to crush or halve any of them once I got to one month out. Some of them are big supplement pills, and I was worried about it, but it hasn't been a problem at all.

I took a pill when I was a day or two out of surgery. I wasnt able to crush it because when I did, I would gag (almost threw up). Take it with Water and you should be okay IMO. Ask your doctor but I was fine.

Your pharmacist can also help you figure out which pills can be switched to liquid, which can be split, crushed, etc. I had no problem with small pills and capsules immediately after surgery, it was only giant, horse-sized pills (think Calcium supplements) that ever gave me any problems. I had liquid lortab and liquid vitamins but didn't need liquids or to crush any other sort of pill. Good luck!

I continued taking my birth control and my prescribed medication immediately after my surgery with no issues. I was allowed to start taking my supplements again at 7 days post-op and didn't have any trouble with any of those either. I never had to switch to chewables, liquid, or sublingual for any of my meds or supplements.

Your surgeon will direct you about taking your meds post-op. I was taking a couple of small pills while in the hospital and did fine with those. Most of my supplements weren't restarted until about one month post-op. Some meds have been discontinued completely, at least for awhile, because I'm now on Coumadin for at least another 4 months if not longer. I did not have any trouble with taking the meds/supplements other than I want to drink more liquid when taking them than what my new stomach will comfortably allow. Great suggestion by another member about asking your pharmacist for help re: crushing, splitting, and liquid alternatives.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
