Band to Sleeve...I think?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I had my lap band surgery surgery 3 years ago this month and after a long miserable 3 years I am now 1 pound lighter than when I had my surgery. Never thought I would even consider another surgery, but now I'm waiting on approval to get a revision. I need to lose 125 pounds and my doctor recommended the sleeve for me instead of the switch because I'm 28 and want to have children very soon. But he said I would only lose an average 60 pounds with the sleeve. He said I could come back and do the switch after I'm done having kids... But I don't want to have to have another surgery, I want to do it right this time.

My main concern is having children right after the switch. My doctor first told me that I needed to wait for a while and now he's saying to consult with my OBGYN to see what she says. I thought my mind was made up but now I'm stressing that the sleeve isn't going to be enough for the weight I want to lose.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions!

Lots of people lose more than the "average" amount with the sleeve. I works by restriction, and it's still there after 60 lbs. is lost. It depends on you to keep yourself healthy by eating between 60 and 80 grams of Protein a day and drinking at least 64 oz. of liquids. Becoming more and more active as you get further out from surgery helps you build more muscle and burn up calories.

Most of the stories I've heard about peoples loss have been really great. They have lost a lot more than the average. I have a friend who lost all of her excess weight in 10 months. Everybody is different but it is absolutely possible for you to lose way more than 60 pounds. They have to give you averages but you will find that most people lose more.

Average has to count the people who are not as compliant as well as those who are. So there may be people who lose 40 pounds in the first two months and then start grazing or not eating Protein first etc and never are able to budge much past that. Then there are those who follow every single rule exercise like crazy and lose everything in 9 months ;-) And then there is average. I call myself above average. I lost 100 in about 10 months and 135 in 19 months. So how much effort will you give is the question.

Well I found out today I was approved for my revision to the sleeve! Looks like it will be February 19th!

Congrats please use the search on this tool for pregnancy. I would recommend you wait for some time post surgery. You're not going to get more than 500 calories for quite some time and you will need to nourish yourself and a baby.

3 musketeers ; first my son (b-d 1986) had the lap band over 5 years ago . Went really great with the weight loss for 2 years .he started at 440 lbs got down to 250. With that came a lot of throwing up ,almost 5 to 6 times a week . Then he mastered how to eat different types of food that would satisfy him and he can hold down slowly he started gaining weight again April of this year he was 420 lbs .the rate of success is very low with the lap band .a lot of doctors stopped doing them and only do sleeve and bi- pass.He had the sleeve in Aug. At 420 now he is at 320 .hope the second time is the charm ! Number #2 my daughter (b-d 1989) in May of 2013 was 275lbs , was getting married nov 1st 2014 . So she really didn't want to be a fat bride. She had the sleeve in August of 2013 . Got married at 170 lbs she was a very happy bride the best choice she said she every made . Number#3 me I'm 55 years old weight problems after high school lost and gained over 400 lbs through my life . I knew I would not make 65 the way I was going elected to have the sleeve . Started my journey at 390lbs in August with the pre-op diet . Had the sleeve on nov. 19 th at 345lbs ( you will gain weight after surgery for a week or so all the fluids and IV your on ) I'm at 317 today 1/20. The best choice I made also . Every body is different . Hope this helps you a little with three different looks of why we had the surgery good luck !

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
