I just had the upper thing done about a week ago. Doc said when he gets the results he will send it to insurance for acceptance. If or when they accept it that is when my gastric bypass surgery will be scheduled.

I am 5'5 at 270lbs and 33 years old. I am so excited to start my new life as I have been overweight since I was 15ish. My weight has only gotten worse as the years go by. Anyways....I'm excited for the procedure but nervous I will mess it up. I'm a full time single mom of 2 young kids(youngest with adhd and odd). I just wish their was people close to me in somewhat same position as I am just to have that support. I don't have that family support or any support for the most part.

I wish all of you luck and I will be there for whoever needs to chat or blow steam. So good luck and happy new year to everyone.

Generally scattered around the country there are bariatric surgery support groups that meet once per month. These meeting are free. They are a way for you to meet others that are undergoing this process. To voice your concerns and fears.

Many hospitals and surgeons that perform this type of surgery can detail where these meeting are held and when they meet.

Susan,

Sounds like you have your hands full. There is no family for support? I only had my sister, she was a lifesaver. She was my caregiver as I recovered. I hope you have a close friend or someone. Recovery really takes some help when you first come home. I was so tired and slept most of the time. I didn't get much Protein in so was compleatly drained. But now I can't imagine not having done this. You will not mess this up because you are ready for change! And if you need some help I can give just message me. More than happy to help. Remember, you are strong and deserve this new way of life.

Maggie thanks for the message. No I have no family support. I'm basically the black sheep out of the family. Lol I had my last son and when I got out of the hospital (same day) I went grocery shopping and did what I had to do as a single mom with a newborn son and 2yr old daughter. Had tubes tied few yrs back and when I was released and got back home I went to the store and did the same thing. Reason for me telling all this is I have been through alot in life most I can't say here. I am a mother first then e everything else. I know recovery will be hard, probably harder then I can imagine but I know I can make it. I have no choice other then to make it. I live for my kids, they are why I'm doing this.

Hi Susan33, Not sure if I am anywhere near you however a lot of our stats seem to be in the same neighborhoods. I am also 33, I am 5'6 and my HW was 288, I believe date of surgery it was 272. I was a single mother to my daughter for the first 6 years of her life before I met my now husband. Single parenting is very difficult but you learn to just DO what needs to be done and not waste any of your precious time complaining about what needs done, and THAT is how things get done!!!! I try explaining this to my husband and he just doesn't get it.....I still sometimes just do what I want done because I wait for no one.....and that is because I had to for so many years. I am CONFIDENT that you will conquer this surgery!!! I had my RNY in November, I actually left the hospital on Thanksgiving night. Who is keeping your children while you are in the hospital?? You will be very tired when you are released home and you will not be able to lift more than 10 pounds, not sure how long your surgeon will leave you on lifting restrictions. I am here if you need anyone to talk to, Good Luck!!!

Thanks and I agree. I gave birth to my son and was released the same day with him. Within a few hrs of being home I walked to grocery store and got a few things for my 2yr old daughter and my dad(rip) who had advanced Parkinsons. I spent my day as though it was like every other day..lol just with an extra baby. Then a few yrs ago I had my tubes tied and again was released same day. I did the same thing as before spent my day like every other day....being a mom. I am not complaining at all but just explaining my situation so apologize if you thought I was complaining. I am getting the surgery not for me but for my kids. I love them. They are my life. Just want to be more active with them and be in better health so I can take care of them for as long as needed.

Oh yeah and Ginger thanks for the compliment/message. This is the beginning of a new life for me and just want to be as ready as I can be. I wish you and your family the best in the present and the future.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
