Nope. It's not wrong.

I was hitting 60 grams of Protein on Day Five.

In the early days post-op, Protein shakes are how you'll get to 60-80 grams of Protein. Eventually, you'll be able to get it in by all or mostly regular food.

My NUT said 60 - 80 grams of Protein per day also: generally 60 for women, 80 for men. Just do your best. You'll get there.

@@lynziv It will probably take you some time. At day 4 I was all protien drinks and cocnute Water. 30grams a shake but I still couldn't get in all in. Keep working on it. It should get easier.

That means I would have to drink 3 to4 shakes a day. Any recommendations on how to that? Sip on them all day I guess. But what about Water? Does that count the as liquids too?

Also I have not had a Bm yet. Is that OK? Last question for now when can I drink out of a straw?

Premier Protein Ready to drink has 30 grams of protien with 160 calories and only 5 grams of carbohydrates. You can get them at costco, BJ's and Sams's Club. And, yes it counts toward your Fluid intake.

You can use Miralax mixed in your Water, broth, etc. to help with the bm situation.

Some doctors say no straws ever, some say it is ok. I use a straw now but didn't for the first year.

OK thank you that helps Alot. I'm finding the liquid or shake gets warm too quick. I might freeze the shake and sip while it thows.

I ended up sipping all day. I was on full liquids. I started my day with 4-6 ounces of Water up waking. An hour later I did a Protein drink. I used CVS whey 26 gms of Protein. I blended it with ½ a cup of plain, greek yogurt. That added another 12 gms of protein. I thinned it out by adding ¼cup of Water and serving it over ice. It took an hour to sip but I'd started my day with 38 gms of protein and at least 8 ounces of water. My nutritionist does count fluids instead of water, but she stressed the need to get in both. However since I started the day off strong, I could coast the rest of the day. I always had my water bottle nearby and when ever I wasn't trying to get in protein I was sipping water. For lunch I might have a cup of hot tea with prosource no carb Liquid Protein. Those packets are 15gms of protein. So now it's lunch and I've gotten in 54 gms of protein. dinner I can take my pick. I usually need a break from the sweet. ¼ cup of black Beans in the nutra bullet. I strain out the skins, add 4 ounces of vegetable broth and heat it up. That's another 10gms of protein making my daily total 64gms of protein. All I have to focus on is sipping water for the rest of the evening. If water isn't your thing, try diluted clear juices, or gatorade.

Water will help you have a BM. As will walking around. If you still haven't gone you can try a stool softener like colace, or mix ins like Miralax or benefiber. Some people drink a bit of prune juice, other use teas like sooth move.

I had problems with the shake getting warm before finishing it as well. Solution: pour it over ice!

Couldn't get all my Protein till about 18 months out. My Nut kept assuring me that it's ok, as long as I take my Vitamins. She advised me not to eat ANYTHING that wasn't a high Protein source. No veggies, fruits or anything else. Just keep sipping and doing your best. I was constipated the entire time, the doctor prescribed daily Miralax and Colace. I no longer need those, now that I am eating vegetables and able to drink more liquids. You need to stop at the first sign of fullness, so you can only do what you can do. Yes, the shakes do count as part of your liquids. Maybe pour a small amount at a time, into a glass, or maybe one of those cups you can freeze to keep it chilled. Straws can introduce too much air into your stomach and cause stretching, that is why they should not be used.

And at 4 days out, it is perfectly normal to have not had a BM, you were empty when you went into surgery, and have consumed little since, and all of it in liquid form. That being said, don't be surprised if liquid in = liquid out. That gets better as your diet progresses to more solids.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
