Protein Shake issues

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks post-op now ... the issue I struggle with is when I take my Protein supplement (shakes), I usually get explosive diarrhea about 1-3 hours later ... I have tried different versions, removed milk, tried soy milk, almond milk etc ... not too much fun ... has anyone else experienced this? does it pass? do I still get the Protein absorption if I have the diarrhea later? Thanks.

I don't have that issue but it sounds like a good question to ask your nutritionist. Maybe a clear Protein like the Isopure?

I agree. Contact your doctor, but also look at more food based Proteins such as yogurt, Soups, etc... At 5 weeks you may be ready to transition to soft foods or purees. Just check with your team first.

All Proteins shakes are not equal, I found some shakes upset my stomach and I am not even post surgery yet!

From a nutritional website:

whey Protein isolate is the highest percentage Protein you can buy. whey protein isolates are typically about 90% protein before manufacturers add in flavors or sweeteners. That means there's little room for anything else. As a result, most whey isolates are fat-free, are very low in carbs, and are lactose free. This makes whey isolates ideal for those dieters trying to dramatically reduce carb consumption or bodybuilders trying to cut-up right before a contest.

For kids or adults who are sensitive to the small amount of lactose found in whey protein concentrate, then these lactose-free whey isolates are an ideal choice. From a taste standpoint, compared to whey concentates, whey isolates have a more watery consistency and tend to taste slightly better.

A typical serving of whey isolate contains about 25 grams of protein, 2-3 grams of carbs and 0 grams of fat. Try the clean, refreshing, light taste of whey protein isolate.

Maybe take a look at the types of shakes you have tried, although you have tried different brands it may be the same kind of protein and additives. Good luck!!

Have you spoken to your doctor yet?

I have known people who have difficulty with certain artificial sweeteners with results like these. In one case it was Malitol that caused a problem. Maybe there is an unsweetened Protein Drink or mix?

I agree that you should talk with your doctor too and with diarrhea that Water consumption has to be up there. I hope you have an answer soon.

I had the same issue and found it to be the sucralose in my Protein Shakes and drinks. I've never been able to stomach that stuff!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
