When did you resume driving, exercising?

Recommended Posts

I have always loved to work out, so wondering when will I be able to resume. How about driving? When did you resume driving again.

I started walking around the block a few days after surgery. At first, I could barely make it around but I did it every day and increased the times around. I drug myself to the car about 5 days post op because I had to get my kids something to eat and my husband was at work. I didn't start working out per Se until 6 weeks but I walked daily before that.

I began walking shortly after surgery. Definitely helps you to wake up, get the gases moving, and the yucky anesthesia out. I just had my sleeve on the 16th, so I am gradually walking more and more. Prior to surgery I walked and/or hiked regularly.

As far as driving goes, my surgeon said that as long as I am taking a controlled substance for pain, I am not allowed to drive. I still take my pain meds... Once in the middle of the afternoon and again before bedtime. definitely helps with the soreness, plus I'm in no hurry to jump into all of my responsibilities just yet.

My surgeon said I cannot drive for a full week and must be off my pain meds, which I am as of post-op day four. Today is day five and I am working on walking around the block for current exercise.

Like others said, my doc says I'm allowed to drive as soon as I'm off the pain meds and in his words: "As soon as you won't be afraid to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision". I started driving 6 days post op. I was cleared for everything expect weight lifting at 8 days out. My doc suggests light walking for 10 to 15 minutes around the block and moving up slowly. I'm already way past that. I'm going to try the elliptical today!

I also love hiking but I know my energy isn't high enough for that yet -_-

I drove at 6 days post-op. One day after leaving the hospital, but I couldn't take being driven around by my gramma anymore. THAT scared me.

Exercise- I have walked quite a bit this week since coming home from the hospital, (today is day 11 post-op), but no 'planned' walking for exercise. My phone measures my steps and I'm getting in about 3,000 a day. Today I shopped for almost 6 hours. My surgeon says I can start getting on the treadmill. He even said I can go ahead and swim now, but his handout says no swimming (incisions) for 3 weeks. I'm probably going to start planned purposeful exercise after Christmas, once I am well on soft foods.

I couldn't drive for 2 weeks post op per my surgeon's instructions and in the very beginning I just slow walked around the house for exercise. At 1 week post op I was allowed to get on the treadmill and walk a normal pace. Then at 6 weeks post op I was allowed to start to do pretty much anything.

I am walking everyday, was walking around the halls the day after. I'm still waiting to be cleared to workout. I'm 12 days out of surgery.

I was off my pain pills the first day home (day 2) and was driving my third day out.

Drove myself home from the airport day 3. Never took any pain Meds. And other than my normal physically active job (which I went back to after 7 days) and daily activities on the ranch, I don't exercise.

I had mine on the 16th in Memphis. I drove and went shopping on the 18th. My Dr said as long as I'm not on pain meds, I should be good to go. I've had no pain meds since surgery, none given at all once I was in the room.

Outside of walking I was advised against working out. Today the doc cleared me to work out and I can't wait to get in some gym time. Driving I was back driving 3days post op. As long as I wasn't on pain meds all was ok per dr.

Exercise - was cleared for general cardio one week post op. Weights one month out. I don't drive. So I can't comment on that.

I did not have the first problem, however, I do not recommend it. I drove home from my parents that night. It was a one hour drive and went back to work that next morning. I felt fine. I have a high pain tolerance though.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
