Is it ok to stop protein for a couple of days?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm 4&1/2 months out and sometimes I feel so bloated and have gas and I'm thinking it is the Protein I'm eating. I get 60 plus a day from a shake a bar and the rest from meals.

Can I do a small 3 day "cleanse" off the Protein to see if I can get the feeling to go away.

At night is when I notice it most. I guess since that is my biggest "meal". I am uncomfortable. I take my ppi in the morning and antacid at night. By morning I'm ok and it starts again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't suggest it...protein is what we need most...your body doesn't produce protein...

Check with your doctor if you are feeling that uncomfortable, you may need Probiotics or something like that to help...

and HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

hope you feel better soon

I would drop shakes and bars and try to get your Protein from real food and also try to get in some Fiber... a supplement or some veggies or fruit or both. Bloating typically means not enough hydration so increase your Fluid intake as well and flush flush flush

You could also try some non meat sources of Protein if you feel like your body doesn't respond well to animal protein. Beans, for example are high in Fiber and protein.

I would not recommend stopping protein.

Not having Protein for a couple of days isnt going to hurt you. Make sure you get your Water in. Water has fixed most issues for me.

It's like CurveyJones says. whey Protein was the big culprit for me, too. As soon as I was able to start eating regular food, my bariatric doctor and NUT suggested that I replace supplements with real food as soon as possible. Even now (ten months), the whey Protein shakes make me feel gassy and bloated.

You are far enough out that if you go for 15 grams Protein with each meal, and 8 grams protein with a morning and bedtime snack, you will at least have the 60 gram minimum that our doctors suggest.

I will try that. Taking out the supplements. I can't eat very much still so I'll step up the food quality of my protein.

I do track with my fitness pal so maybe that can shed some light on what I can eat to make my goals.

Thanks. I've been stalled for 3 + weeks too. Not concerned for it, but it is what it is.

For what it's worth, I stalled for 3+ weeks around 4 months out as well.

You might find that dropping the shakes and bars will help. Bars especially do NOTHING for me. If I wanted to maintain forever I'd eat nothing but bars.

Update ... I have discontinued the bars but kept the shake.

Feeling better and dropped 2 & 1/2 pounds in the past 5 days ... Even with Halloween.

I'm still struggling with eating too fast. It's strange. When I snack I feel bloated but when I don't I feel such hunger for my meal that I eat too fast and I sometimes suffer for up to an hour after. That's what I'm working on now. If I can get that balanced and get a regular exercise regimen going, I'll feel so much better.

Thanks so much for the advice. I've never owned a pair of shoes that have been walked in by others so much than here in this forum. Haha.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
