VSG AND HEARTBURN...ANY REGRETS OVERALL?

Recommended Posts

so I am about to be sleeved this November. I am 280 lbs. I have been fat my entire life!!!!

I currently have heart burn (mainly because of my diet/weight) I have NEVER been diagnosed with reflux or GERD. and I have taken PPI in my past.....

I understand that reflux is possible after the VSG. And it can be managed once you find an acid reducer that works for you but I have a question:

EVEN THO YOU HAVE HEARTBURN AFTER GETTING THE VSG, IS IT WORTH GOING THROUGH TO LOSE ALL THAT WEIGHT??

ANY REGRETS AT ALL?

I think its normal for me to second guess my decision (did you?) and make sure this is what I want FOREVER. and understanding the possible complications and risks.

BE HONEST :) THANK U!

No regrets! My doc actually found and repaired a hiatal hernia during surgery, now I have no heartburn whatsoever, even when I've forgotten to take my PPI. Before surgery, I would spend half the time waking up with reflux. Now I'm happy!

I've never had acid or other heartburn before surgery. However after has been rough. I suffer acid almost every day. Some days worse than others.

Started on omeprazole 20 mg once a day and then twice and now 40 twice a day.

I stopped cold turkey a week ago based on consult with my ent

The surgeon kept saying what I had wasn't acid. Well it is larynpharangeal reflux. It sits in my throat and burns

Ent wants me on dexilant

Surgeon wanted cold turkey

Gi specialist has me cold turkey for a week and follow an acid reducing diet. Then follow up with him.

I gotta say the acid is no different today then when I was on omeprazole.

But that's me and I am seeking treatment and will get this under control

And I would do it all over again and again

never had a known problem until my endoscopy prior to surgery. I guess I had minor GERD. post surgery I am taking pepcid twice a day. I feel the heartburn now. sometimes wake up with that horrible feeling, but still worth it in my eyes. losing weight getting down to a healthy bmi and active lifestyle is well worth a little heartburn. perhaps it will work itself out after a while. I am only 6 weeks out...

Prior to surgery, I had heartburn often. Since surgery, I don't have it as much, but still get it. I end of just taking a Tums and feel better right away - I do that maybe once a week. I usually get it from particular foods - some Tomato based foods get me, if I drink too much coffee, things like that.

Any regrets? Heck no - this is the best thing I've ever done for myself. This is a life changer.

Yes and no. Regret surgery no. Regret the surgeons' actions - or some of them - absolutely.

I am off all prazole drugs. Not fun. We're seeing the others try to work. :)

This is such an excellent question, and one I had too. From my research about HB after being sleeved I worry that when I finally get to see a surgeon, he/she will tell me I can't have the sleeve because if it.

I'm not prescribed meds for heartburn, but I do take over the counter stuff like Pepcid. It's definitely not chronic, nor too frequent though.

BTW, what is a PPI, if I may ask?

I developed reflux immediately after surgery. Managed well with omeprazole 20mg twice a day. I don't know if it's a forever thing since I'm still healing and adjusting.

Any regrets - as in would I do it again if I knew I'd end up with reflux? I'D DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT. Best thing I've done for myself.

thank you ALL for your replies. it sounds like the pros definitely outweigh the cons of gastric sleeve in terms of physical side effects such as heart burn. I was just afraid that if I did develop it, it would never be manageable and id suffer forever and regret surgery. im in the "second thought" stage but your replies make me realize that it will be worth it, and whatever comes along after is manageable and tolerable and is nothing compared to than having to deal with the horrible things that come along with being obese. I appreciate all your support and insight!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
