Super Emotional During Weight Loss?!?

Recommended Posts

I'm still pre-op and have been on my pre-op diet a little over a month (doc is requiring I lose 38lbs before surgery). The first month, I wasn't super strict and only lost 9lbs.

Since Tuesday, I've been in turbo mode and have lost almost 10lbs thanks to the plan my dietician put me on. It's super low calorie (1200 or less), high Protein (50%), low carb (20%), low fat (30%).

The last two days, I have been extremely emotional/weepy! Yesterday, I broke down crying in the office at work with a coworker because my parents aren't coming over today for my birthday (it's Monday). It's not like that is a huge deal. My parents are super supportive and I see them fairly often. They just had something come up and can't make the 2 hour drive today.

Today, I just sobbed uncontrollably over a video about a soldier and his therapy dog. It was a positive story but I couldn't stop crying. Lol!

I'm not suffering from PMS (I'm fairly regular and still 2 weeks away from that) but this feels like the worst case of PMS ever. Had anyone else ever had this experience while losing weight?

Interesting - I've been wondering the same thing this week. I'm 3 1/2 months out, but this past week I got super overwhelmed with work and got emotional and upset with my boss. It's hard for me to really figure out if my response was actually reasonable (I did have a tremendous amount of work/responsibility this week and when I reached out to my boss for support she was critica and completely not helpful) or if I'm somehow more wound up due to the weight loss or low calories.

Proud to say I pulled it all off! Three client presentations in 3 states, and a ton of other work completed. And attended 2 family events. But on the train home last night I was weeping while reading something on facebook...

Also proud to say that I haven't turned to food for comfort. Hasn't even occurred to me, which is wonderful to realize.

I do think that food helped tamp down my emotions in the past and I'm a little more raw now - don't have that protective layer somehow. But I will learn to live with it! SO much happier with my lighter body already. More emotional is more alive in some ways, so I'll take it.

I was sleeved exactly 2 months prior to my wife. My surgery and recovery were textbook...zero complications and no moodier than normal. My wife on the other hand...she had two hernias repaired, had terrible reflux issues and also a problem getting enough Fluid intake. It took about a month for me to sleep with both eyes closed (in her state of mind, she was not to be trusted!). However she is doing great now and that early period is a distant memory.

While all is good and right in the universe now, she had mood swings that would drive me batshit crazy! (We live in the South, batshit crazy is proper English...and a valid description of her frame of mind at the time! :P)

You will just have to get through the gettin' through and don't worry, all will be fine. In the meantime, you may want to avoid stupid people, bad drivers and sharp objects. ;)

Good luck on your journey!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
