Sweets ever again?

Recommended Posts

Just have a question for all of you veteran sleevers! I was sleeved 10 days ago and was wondering if I will ever be able to have something sweet again ... Like a taste of a cookie... Cupcake ... Or anything else. ? I know these foods will never be part if my daily diet anymore but I have heard conflicting reports that we can never have sugar again... That the sleeve will not tolerate it... That we will throw up . True? Just curious ?

It all depends. Some people really can't stomach the sugar, but many of us can.

My advice, for whatever it's worth, is that it's a little early to worry about what you can or can't "ever have again." You need to think through what your triggers are, and how you handle junky eating in general, now while you are recovering. If sugar is a trigger for you (meaning it sets off a chain reaction in you and you have to have more) then I'd put off testing your sleeve with it as long as you can. Most of us have a little list of things we can or can't eat without discomfort. Sugar is okay for me, but it doesn't trigger me and there's not really a lot you can have when you are limiting carbs. It's just not a good choice in general.

At 10 months out there are few foods that I can't tolerate, but my way of eating has changed significantly.

I 100% AGREE with the above poster! Sweets are one of my trigger foods. For almost the entirety of my first year, I avoided them like the plague. I taught myself to eat right, clean, and in a way that FUELS my body. Now that I'm in a comfortable place in which I can TRUST myself, I'll eat them at a party or social gathering, but I try my best (depending on the selection) to eat my Protein or better choices first, then I'll have a just s taste or two. I'm usually too full for more. Although things like Cookies are sliders and don't fill me up, so I'll rarely have them. But, I'll also say this: their appeal to me has definitely changed. I don't crave them anymore. It's like I've weeded them out of my system. (Except one week before "Aunty Flow" comes in, I always have a day that I crave sweets, but I try to satisfy it with fresh fruits, or sugar free pudding, or something to the like!)

So, like the above poster mentioned, don't even worry about that right now. Concentrate on retraining your brain with good habits.

Good luck!

It's not the end of anything. I'm 11 weeks out and if I want a sweet snack I eat a small amount. However, I don't keep much in the house and there's no way I would spend the money on a dessert or sweet while I'm out. I have had a sliver of cake for a birthday or eaten a half of a cookie now and again.

I just try to remember that if I am truly hungry, I can only eat so much, do I do start with the good foods. Then usually I'm full and can't hardly wait for the 30 minutes to be up to drink. So by the time all that is done, there isn't time energy or desire for it.

I've had a few bites of really good Desserts since I got my sleeve, but I've found that unless they look/smell amazing, I'm not interested in even having that much. My sleeve has made me a very choosy eater, and now if I'm going to have a treat, it has to be a really good one. I used to be a total sugar junkie, so to be ambivalent about desserts feels crazy to me. But in a great way!

I am 12 days out. Haven't tried any sweets.

However, my hubby is 4 years out, and he has no problem with sweets. The only thing he has problems with is ice cream, particularly soft serve ice cream/custard/froyo. But sweets, yep, he eats them and enjoys them. He lost 100 lbs on sleeve.

Nibbling on sweets here and there does not make me sick. It does make me fat. Unfortunately I am not someone who is able to stop at small nibbles or who can successfully maintain or lose weight on a plan that includes "moderate" amounts of crappy food. But physically, can I do it without getting sick? Absolutely. But I can't do it and successfully fight obesity.

I can only tolerate very small amounts of sweets. I can have 2-3 Cookies and not get sick but cake is a real problem and ice cream is about 2 teaspoons till I feel sick. Same with cheesecake. So the more sugar combined with fat the worse it is. I get lethargic, palpitations, cramping etc.

For me this is actually a good thing because sugar is also a trigger for me to crave more carbs. If I start I cannot stop. I don't even eat bread carbs in the morning because I will crave all day. I try to eat them only at night.

I can eat naturally occurring sugar in whole fruits and plain or artificially sweetened yogurt. That does not give me a problem. So I can still have sweet healthy stuff or I can have an occaisional cookie or brownie or even a pop tart. But they are few and far between. I bought my daughters milk shakes at mcdonalds as a treat last week and my head wanted one but I knew it would just make me sick! So I of course didn't get it. I can't even tolerate very much of a healthy smoothie - 4-6 oz tops.

But you know if that's the worse part of all this it's easy to live with. Especially when I like what is in the mirror, can shop for clothes anywhere, can kill it in spin class, and never be embarrassed in a theme park or airplane again.

Sweets are out for life. Says my surgeon. :(

Sadly, I could eat all the sweets I want without any physical issue. In fact, I can eat anything I want with no problem. Sometimes I think I should have had bypass for that reason. I think there is a greater chance of dumping with RNY and sugar consumption.

I do not eat sweets, though, because I don't want to be fat again. I will indulge in a little something now and then, but I really have to choose carefully and make it few/far between, because sweets are the "gateway" food for me! All things in moderation.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
