lap band and hiatal hernia

Recommended Posts

That was a surprise last friday. I didn't even know I had it. Anyone else have one repaired at the same time as lap band? Did it slow down your recovery? I'm still sleeping a lot from the pain meds and not doing much. Thanks!

Obesity is one cause of hiatal hernias. So they are pretty common for us folks. I didn't know I had one either until my doc told me he found one and fixed it during banding.

It usually just requires a single stitch, it's no big deal at all. It shouldn't add much to recovery.

I had a large hiatal hernia and was surprised also. Dr. Ortiz fixed it the same day prior to placing the lapband. Afterwards I realized I had lots of reflux but before the surgery I told him oh........maybe a little. Well AFTER-- what a difference. Now I never have reflux even when I eat spicy things.

Hey, I speak Spanglish too! I once had a patient that would be getting IV fluids at home. I called him to tell him (in Spanglish) that his nurse would be there at 6PM to teach him how to use the equipment. Well, that is what I meant to tell him. Apparently what I actually said was a bit different. I told him his breastfeeder would be out at 6PM to teach him how to use the equipment. THAT was kind of embarrassing. ;)

I had an enormous hiatus hernia repaired during my lap band surgery but I knew I had one as I was very symptomatic i.e. chest pain, anaemia, extremely bad reflux. What I wasn't prepared for was how big it was. The hole in my diaphragm was approximately 2" in diameter and half of my stomach was in my chest. Fortunately my oesophagus was in the right place and it didn't affect the placing of the band. It took me about a month to recover and I wasn't allowed to do any exercise for another month in case I ripped the stitches placed in my diaphragm. I am now recovered and feel the best I've done in years.

Something I have noticed and it is true 100% of the time for me. If I am TRYING to speak Spanish, I have yet to have a native Spanish speaker be annoyed or frustrated with what I just said. They are ALWAYS willing to help me and I take full advantage by asking for a word I don't know. I have learned enough Spanish that I can work my way through Mexico, I can speak medical Spanish to my patients, and I can muddle through a simple conversation. I have learned everything I do know from on line sources, my patients, and asking native Spanish speakers for help here and there. It's coming easier and easier.

Usually they will find a hiatal hernia during banding surgery and most docs will fix it right then and there. Obesity can cause such a hernia so many of us have/had them. If an unfill fixed your problems, sounds like it isn't likely a hernia causing the problems.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
