Whey allergy

Recommended Posts

I discovered recently that my allergy to whey Protein is getting much worse. The allergy specialist told me that I really need to avoid all milk and dairy products because they contain whey. I need some advice from others who may already eat a dairy free diet successfully about what things to try.

Can you fill in your profile or give us some information as to where you are in your journey? It's hard to advise not knowing if you're banded now, or to be banded, or you're 3 years out?

My cousin has the same problem. She recently started using hemp Protein. I haven't done much research on it yet but it doesn't seem to bother her and she is extremely sensitive to dairy. Hope this helps :)

I'm glad you sent me a PM :) Anytime I can help, I'll be glad to. I've had my whey allergy for many years now. I've learned how to work around it. I know what foods set me off and what foods I can tolerate, but it's certainly a learning process.

As I mentioned, I use an Egg Protein powder from GNC. I tried a pea Protein Powder...but it tasted like the dirt the peas grew in. Yuck. I'm open to new options as well, and keep looking around. I'll share with you if I find any others :)

I've had some good pea Protein Shakes -- recommend going to a coop or health food store and seeing what samples are available, or purchase single packs to see what you like best. Many places let you return something you don't like -- Vitamin Shoppe for example. The egg Protein Shake I like is some guy's name -- can't remember but could find it on a shelf. I don't do many Protein shakes these days but if I do it's all about the frozen peaches.

Thanks for all of the advice. I am two years out from being banded and my whey allergy was discovered early in my journey but I was always able to eat cheese and most milk products until recently. Kind of struggling trying to deal with no dairy and carrying an epipen everywhere.

It's funny, Bandista...I describe that egg Protein almost the same way...some guy's name on it. But, I found it to be incredibly salty. I took it back to Vitamin Shoppe :)

@@bvernon does this include sheep's milk and goat cheeses? I know there are different Proteins people are allergic to and some people who can't tolerate cow can have Manchega, etc. My husband is GF and our kid can't do dairy of any kind (Asian). Epipen, yikes! Good luck with all......

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
