The great PROTEIN DEBATE...

I went into a GNC and was talking to a guy about protein and he says I should DEFINITELY be having a high protein diet. I keep going back and forth with this.

Dr. says to get it through food. Friends say through food. Some bandsters say have a shake too…and Dr. and Hubby says NO SHAKE. The guy who worked at GNC is a personal trainer and says he suggests a high protein diet to all his clients. He says “What harm can a protein shake do you?” True right? I drink a cholcolate Isopure that has 110 cal per serving and 25g of protein. Should I or shouldn’t I. I keep getting a lot of mixed reviews on this but then I keep coming back to what the Dr. said about it. I dunno. I just want to lose some weight. I’m working my but off but getting a very slow response. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

  • I have never been a huge Protein shake drinker. I drank what I had to as a new post op, then got my protein through food after that. For what it's worth, my doctor has never given me a gram amount f

I usually have one Protein shake a day (the EAS Advantage carb sense chocolate, yum), after a cardio workout or before weight lifting. The fitness trainer said that was the best way to do it...cardio

I don't believe K was talking about a high protein diet, just required protein. There is a big huge difference. Anything over 20-30gms at a time isn't going to be absorbed anyway and it's hard on t

Oh and Wasabubble, was gonna ask you why this is.. when we went to the ER, my mom use to be a nurse person (I don't remember the exact job, I was under age 5 and she quit when I was 6), we were talking about me getting my protein in, she said when she worked at the hospital when people came in malnourished or starved, they would give them pure protein to gain weight. So she was asking why someone losing weight would be stocking up on protein. What's the deal with that?

I've never done that. I'm not sure what "pure protein" was back then. It's not like we had New Whey or Matrix! LOL I can see high protein foods to rebuild muscle mass but I have no idea what pure protein would have been.

Things like Ensure we gave, but it was high calorie/high protein.

The thing is if someone is malnourished or starved, you want them to build up lean body mass, not just fat. So the idea would be to provide all the building blocks for building lean body mass - rather than just mega calories from crap food. But they would need carbs and fat as well. Your body needs all those things to metabolise any of it efficiently. So they were probably getting a high protein formula dietary food? That would be my guess.

She talked like they were people who were unconscious from starvation.. I thought maybe it was some kind of injection.. can you inject protein? This would have been about 17-20 years ago.

Sure. They wouldn't have been given JUST Protein, but protein with other things too in the form of a TPN. (IV for those that can't eat)

Protein alone won't cause you to gain weight unless it is excess protein, just like anything else. Anything in excess and you'll gain weight. With that said, IV nutrition has come a long way in 20 years. :)

Loser- The blue raspberry is not good. It's also half the Protein of the normal, so have to drink the whole thing. One sip and I was makin a face, so I went back to my fruit punch. Since I don't drink them to enjoy them, just to get my protein I think I am just going to stick with fruit punch and drink half 2x a day (or 1 depending on the food I eat). I tried chilling them both, I still prefer them room temperature because it's easier to drink for me. I have found I can get 1/2 a tube in 2 sips now..and I chase it with Water to get the taste out of my mouth.

Just to quip in, according to these IDS new whey shots they say 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight. I'm not drinking 311gs of protein a day.. yeesh.

My doctor said 30-60. I'm averaging about 40 right now, while still being on post-op diet.

I ordered the grape I will let you now how that one taste.
