Recently Lost a Best Friend Because of My Decision to Get Bariatric Surgery

Recommended Posts

Wow count your lucky stars that she decided to not be your friend, because with friends like that who needs enemies! I lost a couple of friends too when I decided to have surgery. I am 17 months post op and happier then ever! She is just jealous that you have the strength to change your life for the better and probably scared that you will get all the attention!

So I had determined that I am not saying anything about my surgery to anyone for fear of negative feedback. But maybe I will change my mind based on this thread. Guess I just as well know who my real friends are up front! Get it over with! And let the cream rise to the top. Those will be the friends I want to ultimately share this with. The rest of the naysayers can be avoided.

I think she is confused about what cosmetic surgery versus weight loss surgery. You don't need ignorant immature people in your life. Your life will change and you will get new supporting friends

Be prepared that after your surgery you will find out even further who your true friends. I told three close friends about my surgery and only ONE called me afterwards to encourage me and see how I was. One finally called after two weeks and the other one I still haven't heard from three weeks out. It hurts, but I have to push on.

My husband called my mother after the surgery and I called her when I got home and I did not hear from her for two weeks. Do you know what would have happened if I didn't call my mother if she had surgery for two weeks? Also, my sister, called me when I got home, then didn't hear from her for a week, and that was an email and haven't heard from her since. How hard is it to ask how someone is doing with a short email or text? It would be better than nothing.

It just makes you realize that you need to support your friends when they go through surgery, illnesses, or a crisis in their lives.

I want to be honest with all of you. Don't look to friends or family as support through this journey. You are blessed if you get that support . Lucky if you at least don't get undermined or ignored. Probably typical that alot of people just aren't "there for you". I don't have a grudge just acceptance of my reality but I feel much more distance from my siblings as they really ignored me through some tough times. So it goes

Your friend sounds like an idiot. The health benefits are undeniable.

Cut your losses with her and move on. Believe in yourself. You are on the right track.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
