I was a "super healthy" fat person until surgery changed my life. Was it worth it?

Recommended Posts

I too was a healthy fat person who was not sleeping and thus became borderline diabetic. I got tired of the c-pap machine because it was not helping me to sleep. I had a gym membership and used it as regularly as possible but I was still carrying a big belly, weighing 219 lbs. I am vehemently opposed to any form of medication except where absolutely necessary. I therefore decided to do the gastric sleeve surgery on 3/11/14. I am now 192 lbs according to my Dr's scale and 182 lbs by my scale. The weight is moving slowly but I think it is better than previously. I can live with slow. To fellow sleevers, :) DO NOT GIVE UP! The alternative is not good.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to read. I am scheduled for surgery on 6/16/14. I am terrified. I have been reading all the negatives and not focusing on all the success stories. I am so glad I clicked on this.

Your story is SUPER inspirational! I am 5 weeks out and have been getting a bit jealous of all of the people that have lost so much. Until I read your post. Now I feel more inspired to grab a firmer hold of my physical/spiritual self and hang on for the ride.

I can't wait until I am at the point where you are in life. Confident with yourself from the inside out.

I too was a "super healthy fat person" much to the surprise of my doctors and surgeon and while I'm only eight months out I can definitely appreciate the improvements to my quality of life post op. There are a handful of people who've stuck out to me since I joined this site and you're one of them. I thoroughly enjoy your posts. Thanks for sharing your story.

Wow I feel like I am reading a sneak peak into my own story. I am a fat healthy chick. Here I sit 5 ft 2in 284 oozing more confidence than ladies half my size. Active, but beat afterwards. Waiting for my approval from insurance for a July date. I pray that my story ends up exactly like yours. I was afraid when I came across your title that it was going to be a story of how your health went downhill after surgery - so glad that was not the case. Keep rocking it out sister!

Thank you for posting this!

I have told myself that the "only" thing wrong with me right now is that I am 140 pounds overweight. The scared part of me tells myself "maybe you don't need to take such drastic measures; you're not trying to cure diabetes or high blood pressure". But I am tired a lot and my body feels heavy and sluggish on a regular basis. I don't last that long during physical work before I have to sit down and rest. Not a 10 or 15 minute rest, not even a half hour rest. I have to rest for like an hour or two, then I can get back at it for a couple more hours. Then I have to rest again. We live in the country so I am constantly frustrated by the lack of ability to get things done. But even at work, just sitting on my behind at a desk, I feel really tired when I'm done for the day. I have little motivation to exercise because I feel "blah" most of the time. That is no way to live.

It's been so long since I have been at a normal weight, I have completely forgotten what it was like to be that way. Thank you for reminding me!! Every day I come on here I find more reasons to see this through because of all the really special people on here who share their experiences and stories.

You look absolutely great by the way. I love how happy and heathy you look. Those pictures just ooze vitality.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
