Trouble with the band. Does it get any better?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, it's me again. I was banded 3-6-14, and were ecstatic. Well, sadly I have had nothing but trouble due to this thing. I am now one week down from Post op, but I do not feel like myself anymore. I have been in so much pain, I haven't been able to gain my normal life back. I struggle to obtain the adequate amount of Protein. All I can drink from those dreaded Protein shakes are about 8-10 Protein. 64 ounces of Water is honestly too much for me as well, I'm lucky if I'm able to handle 20. Blended up food into an apple sauce consistency? Keeps me sick to my stomach. I feel great upon waking up, but when I stir around for a good 2 hours I get this queasy feeling, and shortly after start throwing up violently. Which causes SEVERE pain. Is there anything I can do to stop this? I am at my wits end, and as much as it saddens me, but once I'm done healing I'm seriously considering never filling the band again. Has anyone ever felt like this before? Please help someone. Thank you

call your doctor. you need medication to bring the vomiting under control. I know of several ppl that have a stomach virus. the grocery clerk at the store said she was selling a lot of ginger ale and crackers so its going around. first call your doctor even though it is the weekend, drink hot tea. don't try to eat anything solid for now. get some of that ginger tea. vomiting isn't good for your band. so this is to be taken seriously.

Go Monday and see your doctor. I had the same thing after surgery and did not know that the doctor had prefilled the band during surgery. I was miserable and could not keep much down. It was from the band being partly filled and the swelling around the band. I had immediate relief when the doctor took out the Fluid. I waited 2 weeks and was miserable before going to the doctor!! So don't wait go see doctor.

Were you cleared to eat normal food even if it's blended? Seems a little soon for regular food?

Violent throwing up can cause the sutures that hold the band in place to tear away. At the very least, throwing up will cause more trauma to your stoma and sutures which causes the stoma area to swell, making it difficult for food(or water) to pass through.

Just one violent throwing up episode requires a call to your doctor.

One more thing. Drinking 64 ozs of Water and eating 60 g of Protein shouldn't be a necessity the first two weeks post op. Maybe a goal, but not a necessity. We all had enough fat storage to last us several months going into surgery so no need to fret over a few ozs or grams here or there. Maybe 6 weeks post op, but till then, it's just a goal. imo

Maybe you are too tight or too swollen? I agree with overthemoon, you may have to get some Fluid removed from the band.

I could not swallow Water after surgery, so they removed all 3.5 cc's from my band that they placed during surgery. After that I went home and one day later could not even keep my own spit down. I ended up in the ER and had to be place on IV and cortisone.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
