Hello May Bandsters, Just wanted to share with everyone I got banded yesterday and everthing went great. I am sore which is normal, but it is not bad. I got really nervous when they were getting me ready for surgery, but it was over before I knew it. So good luck too all you who are getting banded in May. And it really is not bad.

Greetings All!

Well had my surgery on Tuesday. Doc discovered a hiatal hernia when he was poking

around inside me, so he fixed that too. Came home yesterday. I'm sore with pain

when I get up and down, but tolerable. No pains meds needed. Just feeling

generally tired and sore, but nothing I can't deal with. The gas has been minimal

up to this point, but this morning seems to have kicked in. I'm just a big ole

fart factory!!!

Learning to sip and drink 4 oz of liquid over a 20-minute period is difficult,

but I'm getting it. The full feeling comes on quickly, doesn't it!

Haven't yet read all the posts I've missed, but hope all banded in the past few

days are doing well. And that all those going in today - Kansassooner, cyndilou29,

amy, Phyllis S, deb24, jojo, sue11 and Lori Ann - have easy goes of it!

I think I have gotten most of the calendar updates, but I'll read through the last

two days carefully and post again if necessary.

Cheers to all.

Margaret

My heparin shots were in my stomach. Nice! Between my 5 incisions and my three shots, it looks like a war went on there.

I got my band Tuesday evening, and felt great in the hospital! Walked around a lot, no gas, not a lot of pain. But, since getting home last night I am just miserable! I cannot get comfortable anywhere. Forcing myself to drink the Protein Shakes, Water is good, gas has begun but I am SO sore. Is this normal? I feel really tight in my belly, lower chest cavity. Help?!

The tightness in the chest may be from drinking to fast. My doc says 1oz. every 15 minutes. Stay on the pain meds as directed even if you don't feel you need them. I stopped taking mine on day 5, I think. Now if I have residual pain I take adult liquid tylenol.

my heparin shots were in my left thigh. A couple of days after surgery i was lookin at these purple dots on my thigh wondering what they were and then I remember the shots . . . .oh yeah.

Hey Band-mates - twinmommy, eljmom, Wej, LisaM, Laurienj, and pinenut! Isn't it good to feel almost normal again? I had some yogurt today even though my doc doesn't consider it liquids but since most of yours do I decided to try some. I'm losing way to fast (2 pounds per day) and am light headed all the time so I hope this helps a little. Plus I think it will be good for my digestive track. I am not supposed to be on mushies for three more weeks but I do get Protein Shakes and Vitamins added back tomorrow so maybe I will feel stronger then.

okay . . . the yogurt is a tad painful . . . can feel it in my pouch. maybe I will wait till tomorrow.

Thanks Jessica, I will sip much more slowly.

Does anyone find relief from Gas-X? Are Tylenol Go-Tabs on the ok list?

I cannot take codeine as I am allergic, so they gave me a very small pain pill which goes down okay, I just don't know if it is strong enough.

I am trying to be positive because I am SO excited about changing my life, but it's hard when you feel like absolute shit.

I enjoy reading all of your "stories" & input...makes me feel better!

Thanks everyone!

anjul 10 - did they send you home on different meds then at the hospital? I felt worse at home but partly do to lack of strong medication. The nurse told me day 2 & 3 would be the worse. I thought day 5 was the turn around day when I could say I was feeling better. Hang in there cuz it does get better eventually.

I took a lot of gas x strips (4-5/day) and lived with a heating pad on my stomach for several days. Try to stay in bed propped on pillows and only get up to go to the bathroom. When you have to get up then take a lap around the house a few times and get back in bed. My doc said 3-4 sips per ounce of Water . . . . small amounts.

Wenjea,

I got Dilaudidi in the hospital once but it was in addition to the IV pain killer. They wanted to see if it worked, which it did in combo. Now, I am not too sure. I am counting on this all changing after day 3!

I have the tightness again, almost like a spasm, but haven't had a sip of anything in 25 minutes???? Puzzling.

I think I would feel so much better if I could sleep. Since the surgery, the longest shut-eye I have gotten is 80 minutes! UGH! Any sleep hints from all you experts out there?

FaithMD,

Do you have any more information, or know where I can get more about that new AP band thats coming out next month? I believe that's the one I just got, but I can't find any info on it online..

Hello LilMonkey, if you are in Canada or Australia, you likely could have had the AP placed. If you are in the US and your surgeon was one of the 50 or so across the nation chosen to place early releases of the AP band (out of the 1,000 or so LapBand surgeons in the US), you may have gotten the AP. If you were banded in Mexico, your guess is as good as mine. Here's some more info:

AP Band information:

Here's the link to a thread in Dr. Curry's Forum about his experiences with the AP band, it explains more about the band and it's differences:

Trace W. Curry, M.D. :: View topic - New AP band

And here's a link to a thread on here about it, I spoke with "the band guy" at Allergan about the AP band a couple of times. Though he of course cannot make any reccommendations one way or the other about whether one should ask for the AP, he did provide me with a lot of useful info. Allergan is NOT discontinuing their other bands at this time. All will still be available, they all work well. As a side note, the AP has been being placed for quite some time now in Australia and Canada, it is just being released in the US next month. There is a learning curve (small) for surgeons and from what I've heard they will need to upsize some of their instruments in order to pass the new AP band through them:

Hope this helps!

jessica - how tall are you? I was just noticing that you and I have almost exactly the same amount of weight to lose and banded on the same day. You are a heck of a lot younger though . . . I am young at heart!

anjul 19 - send someone to the store for liquid tylenol PM. The heating pad helped me relax the most so I could sleep. My back was the only position that was possible. I have just started sleeping on my side again with a pillow to prop up on. Hope this helps. . . .I know how hard it is and when you read how easy someone else is having it, it makes you think something is wrong. I have a very high pain threshold and I had a rough 4 days. Don't push yourself, relax, stay in bed!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
