2 day liquid diet prior to sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

In reading the posts it seems that most people are on a 2 week pre op diet. My instructions are for 2 days. Anyone else have a 2 day diet ? I have worked so hard for over a year to qualify for this surgery I dont want anything standing in my way!

Hello,

I've heard of both a 14 and 7 day pre op liquid diet, but never 2 days. My doctor told me that the purpose of the diet is to allow your liver to shrink so that your stomach will be more visible and easier to get to during the surgery. My diet is 7 days and i'm on day 3. If 2 days is enough for your liver to shrink then go for it!

Best of luck to you on your journey:)

I was told two days before surgery eat light, the day before surgery Clear Liquids only, nothing by mouth after midnight. It was great! This was for my revision from band to sleeve last year. I think with my band surgery I was on a 2 week liquid diet in 2008. Same hospital and surgeon for both surgeries.

Two days of clear liquids only is what my dr required.

I will have a 10 day full liquid diet and 3 days before surgery it will be only Clear Liquids. They told me it was to shrink my liver so my stomach would be more visiable.

My doctor didnt even require a preop diet...and when I asked here a few others had a similar experience...just begin a liquid diet anyway to be on the safe side ... maybe have an egg or Protein for Breakfast it helps ensure your alertness throughout the day.

I think the pre op diet its good because besides "shrinking your liver" it also helps you go through all the food/caffeine/sugar/carbs withdrawal, it teaches you to identify your head hunger vs tummy hunger

* after surgery your head hunger will be under control so 1 thing less to worry while in bed w other pains.

My surgery isn't until the 26th so yes even when my surgeon just said to control my eating n not to gain no more than 5% of my original weight even then i decided to follow a diet (Protein shakes Breakfast n dinner; 3-4oz lean baked Protein w 1/2 veggies lunch; also made homemade beef Soup n strained it; Snacks sf Jello, sf popsicle or my beef broth.

The first 3 -4 days are the hardest but it becomes doable. You get to learn so much about Proteins. N remember Proteins will be our best friend for the rest of our lives

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
