Mexico Vertical Sleeve

Recommended Posts

So, after long talk with my wife & information from people we know, I've decided to not have the sleeve with the surgeon in San Fransisco. We are going to have the Vertical Sleeve done in Mexico. I know multiple people that have done this exact procedure with the same surgeon in Mexico and they turned out great. Plus the cost is considerably less than then they other surgeon. I'm the type of person that likes all the info upfront about everything. I don't appreciate it when they know finances are an issue for everyone, and not tell me about a fee of $5,750.00 until after I jump through all their requirements and my insurances.

I know some people may not approve of people choice to go to another country for surgery, but for me, I feel its the best thing for us. Plus it's nice to have a caring wife who is Hispanic and speaks fluent Spanish too. I'm not worried at all, in fact, I can't wait until March to have the procedure.

I'm going through www.weightlossagents.com for the procedure. They are great to talk to and are able to answer all my questions I had. Plus I do like they Patient Portal the have avail. The surgeon is Dr. Almanza with Jerusalem Hospital in Tijuana Mexico.

If you have gone through Dr. Almanza, please give feedback. I would also enjoy talking with anyone who is also planning on going in March.

Thanks for reading.

Do what works best for you! That is the most important thing. I was self pay in the states. Had mine done in Dallas. $12,200 all inclusive with a top surgeon. That was what was right for me.

Do what is right for you. You will know when you feel it.

So glad you are taking this step. It is AWESOME!

No regrets.

Bargain at twice the price!

Life is so much better!

Good luck to you!

Hey borders3,

I'm going to move this to the "self pay Mexico forum"

My only comment is to say that Jerusalem "hospital" is actually a clinic in a strip mall.

Some people know that before hand and are ok with it. But others don't know this info and show up expecting a real hospital....

Yes, I'm aware that it is located in a strip mall. I've heard great things about it though. LOL. I've looked very hard into this. On this forum, on youtube, their online websites & through people I know locally that have been there. I may have been worried, but not anymore.

Hello Borders3,

MI Doctor in Tijuana is a real Hospital. You might wanna look them up. That's where I'm having my surgery and have spoken to others that had their surgery there too and turned out just fine. Good Luck.

Thank you for your concern, but I'm not worried about the location. I decided to go through them because of their impact left on them by past patients that I know locally.

I am going with Dr Almanza also. I am scheduled for January 14th. I have done a lot of research and feel he is the right choice for me. :)

Congratulations for making the jump! I too, have opted for the sleeve in Mexico. I'm going with Dr. alejandro lopez (Specialized Bariatrics) at Hospital MI Doctor on January 20. I honestly think that there are so many good surgeons out there that as long as you have made your best effort to research everything you can about them, the surgeon you ultimately choose will be the best for your situation. :-)

I also decided not to deal with my insurance company in the States. By the time I jumped through all of the ridiculous hoops, denials, appeals, denials, appeals, etc., I would still be paying around $8k out of pocket, even if it was "covered" by my insurance. No thanks. I did my due dilligence and feel completely comfortable about going to Mexico, and hope to be able to be an advocate for it when all is said and done. Good luck to you! :-)

Good luck to everyone. I am 11 days out from my VSG with Obesity. Control Center in TJ. Had a great experience. The OCC staff and Marriott staff were incredibly kind and accommodating and I am feeling great postop. Looking forward to 2014, as I'm sure you all are, too.

Mexico is a great option for those of us that decide to go there. I had a good surgeon, and even though I had surgery in a clinic I had a private nurse..so that was a perk. The price made it a reality for me. 121 lbs down and feeling great!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
