Well I started my preop liquids today. My surgery is March 20. Finally:clap2:.

I was just wondering if someone could answer hopefully a simple question. Protein Shakes are one the liquids that are allowed but I always add frozen fruit to it. when I blend it together. Is this a no no? Its liquid. Are three Protein shakes enough for one day (8-10 oz)? Hopefully I can make through this stage of it.

Thanks BT (Big Trouble) :flame:

Well....I've been on the pre-op now for about a week and a half...3 more to go, yup a wholllle month! My Dr. was very specific about how many gms. of carbs and how many gms. of Protein I was to take in with each shake. I've discovered when I'm following things to the T I am COLD....and I never get cold. They say that's a sign of the ketosis thing....

So....I would say it depends. I add powdered strawberry or raspberry which only add about 1 carb to the mix...and being a cooking gal, I measure my stuff to come out to the correct amount of protein/carb #'s the Dr. wants. I count my gms. of each to be within guidelines given by the Dr.

I have found that just can't abide mixing with Water...so I count my carbs in the fat free milk, and mix my powder accordingly. Also, by mixing with unsweetened soy milk, it's actually pretty good.

So, there ya go....it's not a simple answer because there's not a national standard for this pre-op thing. Just follow the Dr....and try not to be bored with it....(whoops, advice for me in there....AARRRGGHHH)

My surgery is the 28th...so we can be bored together...lol.

Best of luck!

I'm confused, my surgery is 3/14 and my Dr. wants me to start the liquids 4 days before surgery. Why do you have to start so early?

Surgeons vary in their pre-op diet requirements. Some require 2 weeks of liquids only. Mine requires a week of medifast shakes only. Some don't have a pre-op diet at all. Some are somewhere inbetween all of these. It all depends on the surgeon. The reason for the liquid fast is to shrink the liver (and some other reason that escapes me at the moment) so the field of vision is clearer for the surgeon to work.

IMHO...I think that since my Dr. knows I'm a southern chick....he thinks that I need a little extra encouragement to make sure I'm commited to the post op plan.

That being said, I really am ok with it. I'm down my 10 lbs already for pre-op, so if more goes, it's just bonus. But...I sure miss flavorful food. I ate pretty healthy before due to changes I've made in the last couple of years, but the endless round of choc, strawb., vanilla, etc. for the next 3 wks. is gonna drive me nuts.

Hi Everyone - I got my surgery date, March 19th. Woo Hoo! I agree with previous posts, the time you are on liquid is determined by your surgeon. I'm on strict liquids for 2 weeks. No sugar, no fat, no fruit. 3 Protein Shakes a day. Like they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I'm already down 8 pounds pre-op. Good luck all.

Hi Big Trouble,

I am from New Jersey and was banded on 01/31/07. How confusing when you read everyone's threads...some Dr's require this and some require that. From my own personal experience is you do the best you can to get ready for surgery. Keep reading and posting as many questions as you can on this site. Most of the people on this site have had surgery. My Dr. hasn't and does listen to my questions but he doesn't always have the best answers.

Try to do your best. Prepare your body the best you can for surgery. THe more Protein you have the less hungry you will feel. I sware by powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein shakes. THey have been a real life saver for me. I mix them with fat free milk. Once in a while I make a smoothie.

Remember...having LapBand is a life change. You can still eat normal foods you are just learning to eat smaller portions. You can have ice-cream when you have that craving. Don't beat yourself up if you slip just get back on the program and move forward.

I know I am new to being banded but I am doing ok. Surgery was very easy for me. I had no problems. I just came back from the Dr.'s and I am down 23 pounds from surgery. No bad. I am losing slowly and that is ok.

I really wish you the best of luck!!!!

Jane from NJ

I have been on the pre-op diet for 10 days - op is this coming Sunday.

The shakes and Soups were provided by the healthier weight centre and are called Weight to Go. I was told to have four shakes and two soups per day along with five portions of fruit or vegetables. I put frozen bananas or rasps, strawbs or blueberries in the shakes [they are made with water] and it really thickens them. Ice cubes thicken shakes too by the way

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
