constipation & gas pain

Recommended Posts

I've read several threads on Constipation and see it is a problem for most if not all. I've heard many suggestions but want to know which remedy is best and does not cause terrible gas pains when you finally have a BM?

I just want to make a correction. I don't think MOST of us suffer from Constipation as a given. I've been banded for 4 years and can't remember being constipated until I had 8 hours of cosmetic surgery in October.

If you are undergoing anything (like surgery, or being on pain meds etc) that will cause constipation, try a stool softener. laxatives can make things uncomfortable AND are not designed for continual or long term use because it causes a) dependency in order to stool and B) a wicked constipation/diarrhea cycle.

To avoid constipation, keep fluids up, minimum 64 oz per day. Eat Fiber items or natural laxatives like prunes.

I have heard it's from the pain meds which is why I see so many threads about the Constipation post op. I know once I'm completely off the meds it will get better. There are so many suggestions and I just wanted to know which one will work AND not feel like your insides are being ripped out. :)

I am just day 3 in my mushy foods so I am limited to what I can eat so a natural solution is not going to work for me at this stage. I was told to stay away from juices and calorie drinks. I just needed advice on a short term bases.

Every one is different, of course, but pain medication can really do a number on the digestive tract, particularly for people who are already prone to Constipation anyway. I am taking Smooth Move herbal tea with me to the hospital tomorrow to get a little head start just in case. Figure I'll be able to sip on some hot tea tomorrow night in the hospital, don't know! Hope I won't need the Milk of Magnesia or stool softeners I purchased -- really hope I won't need a lot of pain medication either, but I guess I will find out when the time comes. Once I'm on regular food again I suspect I will need extra Fiber in my diet.

What are fiber chews? Of course I'm on my pre-op liquid diet and I would eat anything right now just for the sake of chewing. Cardboard comes to mind!

Miralax! My BFF is a doctor and I was going to take m.o.m but she said mix it in with a drink and I wouldn't have all the cramping and I didn't.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
