My Plication Story - 7 Months Out

Recommended Posts

I know when I was looking into having plication done, there weren't too many posts from people after about a month out from surgery, so I thought I would add my story from a 7-months point of view.

I started the plication process last fall, had my first appointment in early November. I started my preop diet on December 9, 2011, at 264 pounds. I lost 16 pounds on my 2-week preop diet, I think it was, weighing in at 248 the morning of surgery, which was December 22. Yes, I actually had my plication surgery 3 days before Christmas!!

It's been 7 months today since I had my surgery (I didn't realize that when I started writing this!). I weighed in at 198 today, so down 66 pounds from the preop diet, 50 pounds from the morning of surgery. Honestly, did I think I would have lost more than this by now? Absolutely yes! Am I disappointed? Absolutely NOT. I weight 66 pounds less than I did. I can move better. I am starting to be able to shop in the regular sizes and not always plus departments. I went hiking with my husband and didn't die! (I thought I might, though. lol)

I'm not sure why the weight loss has been slow. At first I started to blame it on "starvation mode" - maybe I had destroyed my metabolism or something. Over time, however, I have increased my calories to the point where most days I eat between 1200 and 1400 calories, and my weight-loss pattern has pretty much remained the same. I lose a few pounds one week then nothing for 1-3 weeks. This last time it was a whole month with no loss then 6 pounds in the last week. Again, I really have no idea what is going on with that.

I am vitamin-D deficient and iron-deficient. I had followup labs drawn Thursday to see if my supplementation has improved those numbers.

When I started the process, what finally made me go forward with it was the realization that while I might regret it if I did it, I knew I WOULD regret it if I didn't. So do I regret it? Nope. I can't overeat. I can eat a surprising amount of calories in a day if I'm not careful, which is why we are told this is not a fix unless we put in the work, but only if it's complete junk. I have natural Portion Control. I still go to Chipotle (my favorite!), but instead of eating my entire bowl, I eat about 1/3 of it, sometimes half if I'm especially hungry. Even now, the misery if I overeat is sufficient to keep me from doing it too often. So even though the weight loss is slow, it's not nearly as challenging as it was before to stay on plan. It's exactly what I was looking for - an external appetite control to help keep me from overeating.

I have a blog at wordpress.com (it's called myplication) if anyone is interested in more of the details from along the way, and as so many others who have posted here, I'm happy to answer any questions about specifics. My surgeon was Dr. Trace Curry in Cincinnati.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
