Bypass vs Sleeve: what made you decide?

Recommended Posts

I went to see my bariatric nurse today and my mum came with me. I asked all the remaining questions I had about the sleeve and my mum brought up the bypass. She thinks this will be better for me because there's more information on it, it has been done for the last 40 years. Also I'm a grazer and the sleeve isn't supposed to work so well for us. Also the recommended revision for people who have had bands is the bypass. So now I'm thinking perhaps I'll have the bypass instead. But all my research so far has been on the sleeve. Does anyone have any advice or input they'd like to share on their decision?

My doctor actually gave me the option when it was decided the band had to come out. I asked him what he would advise, he stated for me the bypass. His reason was that since I was a diabetic they see more success with putting that in remission. The sleeve on the other hand will still allow me to eat sugar and fat. Also if you have reflux the sleeve is not an option. I don't have this problem though. Also, I don't feel there has been enough research done on the sleeve so don't know the failure rate. Just like the band, when I had it, there wasn't much research and now that it is coming in doctors aren't recommending it like they use to. Failure rate is too high. The decision though is up to you.

UK-Sleever, I had a band, going to have RNY 10/29/13! I thought I might like the sleeve as you, but, I know myself and would cheat like crazy!!! My son has the sleeve and went from 320 to 180 when he was 19. He looks good, feels good and eats anything in moderation. Moderation is what I got with the lap band. I know for myself the restriction with malabsortion is my choice. It will not be kind if I want something bad.....I don't want to go thru all this again and not achieve success!!!! Good luck with YOUR choice. From Texas.

I was sleeve bound until my doctor pointed out the bypass had better results/chances/stats for curing my diabetes than the sleeve does.

Hi UK,

I currently have a lapband and have chose to revise to the bypass. My lapband has been causing issues and my doctor recommended having it removed, and left the choice up to me as far as the sleeve or bypass. Initially, I wanted the sleeve, mainly due to the malapbsorption issues with the bypass. However, in doing more research and talking to my surgeons, I have decided to do the bypass. I feel that there are too many similarities with the lapband and sleeve. I cant believe I need to go through weight loss surgery again! I really thought the lapband would be my final solution with my weight loss battle. I want the gold-standard in weight loss surgery and hope that I never need my stomach messed with again! Good luck with your final decision and your surgery. Mine is scheduled for October 15TH. Cant wait! :D

Hi,

I was all set to have the sleeve done, scheduled on October 23rd, I had to go see the dietician on Monday, Sept 30, She noticed that I have acid reflux and said to me that I could have problems with it getting worse and suggested that I have RNY surgery instead. As soon as I got home I called by surgeons office and asked them about the acid reflux and they verified that yes it could get worse, so then and there I decided to change to the RNY Gastic By-pass. The only trouble I had was that they had to re-submit my paper work to the insurance company again, within 2 days I was approved for the surgery and kept my original surgery date of October 23rd. Also, as someone else stated, you need to stay away from sweets and fatty foods, and I always have trouble with eating to many sweets, so in the end this will really be helpful for me.

Good luck to you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
