Surgery in 4 days and I am in a funk

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Well, my surgery is 8/7 and yesterday and today I just feel blah and kind of full of trepidation combined with denial. It's just a general funk. I am not sure what it's all about. I am afraid I will fail that is certain and I look at some posts on here with people failing a few months in after gastric bypass, it scares me more. I also feel unprepared but like I could never possibly be prepared. I feel anxious and really really quiet and distracted. Quiet is definitely weird for me. At this point, I'm hungry (this is day 7 of the pre op diet). I've lost 15.5 lbs on this ten day pre op diet but I feel really empty, both in my stomach and mentally. I don't know, maybe I just am lost without my food. I have a whole lot going on in my head but nothing really tangible. This is all very weird!

You cant go in to something like this with a failing attitude. You need to rationalize why you are doing this and you have to be confidant that you will succeed. Its all a mental game. You will be fine. If you ned anyone to talk to hit me up on here.

Thanks. Deep down I feel confident I will be successful, it's the nagging part of me that doesn't show up. I think I just feel very alone in all this because really, I am. It's a battle I am going to have to fight I'm just feeling nervous. I'm sure I'll be fine, just feeling blah

We all have that voice that says we are going to fail. You need to tell that B to shut up. You're not alone, you have the support of your surgeon, you have the support of this forum. Everything will be great.

This is a long journey, and honestly you are at the hard stage. I had all those thoughts, and after a year I think I realized what it was. Our brains are amazing organs, but I believe them to be much like a two year old caught in the terrible twos. When they don't get their way they throw temper tantrums. Right now you are denying your brain those food pay offs that we have all done over the years of being overweight. Now you are saying no and just like a two year old at the grocery store your brain is throwing a fit. BUT I WANT IT.......

Now there is good and bad news with this.

Good news:

You are learning now how to deal with your two year old.

You are learning you are stronger than your brain

You are taking the steps to be healthy and living your life.

You will succeed like everyone does who follows the plan

You will gain the confidence and reassurance that you made the right choice

You are not alone!

Bad news:

Your brain will continue to throw major fits for several months, and small fits from time to time

You will have moments that you regret the decision

You will have stalls in your weight loss - it does not mean you have failed it means you are normal. Again your brain throws fits during this process and one of them is stalls and then the evil voice comes back.

Bottom line YOU GOT THIS GIRL!!!! And we are all behind you and supporting you!!!

I can totally relate! Kudos to you for having such a successful pre-op liquid diet this far.....I kinda wish my dr. Makes his patients do a liquid diet, but he doesn't. I am considering doing one for a week on my own to get kick started, but my 2 year old says to keep eating up until the last bell tolls at midnight 8/19!

Best of luck on wed. - I am looking forward to hearing how you are doing!

Thank you! Today is day 9 of the liquid diet and I certainly have an opinion on it now lol.. First, I'm hungry. Cranky hungry. I had no problem the first three days but have been hungry since. I have no cravings at all and can look at food and smell food and not care. But I'm hungry so I want something hardy like a cheeseburger! That being said, I am glad that my doctor requires this because I think it makes the shock after surgery easier. I essentially gave up my food 9 days ago. I dont consider these Protein Shakes and broth food lol. If I was having my last food hoorah up to midnight tomorrow, that would so not be good. So, I think the liquid diet is a great idea for like 5 days. Now I want to not be hungry. I dont even need to eat just make me not hungry please :) For that reason, bring on the surgery! This liquid diet has also made me nauseous, light headed and dizzy. Honestly, if you are up to it, I'd say doing the diet for a few days, maybe 3-5 would be really good. It's just this 10 really sucks. Oh, did I mention that I am freaking hungry lol?

Tomorrow's the big day Lisa and it's very likely that you won't have any appetite for at least a couple of weeks and possibly longer. You're gonna love the new you!!

Thank you! I'm sitting here wondering, how bad/sleepy/crummy will I feel in the hospital? I'm wondering if I should take my computer or leave it home. I have a kindle but it's not my computer. Me and those no good flash games lol.

Everyone is a little different but I can tell you I was genuinely surprised by how little pain I had. I laugh about the fact that I literally had more pre-op stress than I did post-op. I was up and walking two hours after surgery. Not walking fast mind you, but walking! I would definitely take the Kindle as long as there aren't any hospital rules against it. Daytime TV is not much to brag about and anything that occupies your mind while your recovering is a good thing. They have this surgery down pretty pat - I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised!!

Hey. I actually felt very similar before hand. I was very anxious/nervous and couldn't really focus on much b/c my mind was everywhere. The closer it got, I felt like I needed to be doing something but didn't know what. Finally, the day came and went. Just to warn you, it can get emotional afterwards too. I cried all night about 2 days PO, questioning what I had done. Then I posted it on here and everybody let me know that its very common. And it passed. :)

I'm only 7 days PO right now...but I definitely feel better and think this is gonna be good for me. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
