I agree!

I am two days post op and will be leaving the hospital in a few hours. I just showered and man that helped so much. For the most part my recovery was going very smoothly until last night. I was so nauseated and dry heaved a few times which is painful and scary. I was able to start passing gas last night, which was wonderful (never thought I would be so happy to do that)!

Right now I'm scared to take in much more than Water. My full liquids start tomorrow. So I have a few questions: what should I start out with and when did you start feeling more like yourself again? Are you always scared when you move up to a new food stage?

Thanks so much!

Surgery: 6/26/13 HW 370 SW 320

Hell yea ! I read ever label like it were instructions on how to defuse a bomb. I take no chances.

start out small and if it works for you try variations on the theme. If eggs work than run with it . etc etc ...

Here is a word of caution on something I experienced yesterday . While leaving the market I realized I had run out of precious H2O

so this store only had cold sodas and crap like that NO COLD WATER !! So I saw in the distance a case with cold "Natural " Protein Drinks

after a half hour of reading all of the labels I found what i had believed to be the perfect drink. it met all of the criteria

less than 5 on fats

23 on Protein

15 on carbs

and it was ODEWALLA pineapple, coconut, mango ... I was in heaven!!! ....... NOT!!

it was all listed in percents not in grams .... grams were there but in teeny tiny print.

of course I found this out after 3 sips ( it was just too damn sweet ) And since I had just jumped on the trolley , I rendered the return policy null and void .. SON OF A B .... $3.95 down the drain, literately

Morel to this story: KNOW the difference between percentage and Grams

OH well live and learn that's what this journey is all about .

Catch ya in the funny papers

RJ

Ask your surgeon. I had no physical restrictions at all. Was just told if something hurt not to do it.

Well just got back home from my EGD. I did have a stricture they said it was so small they couldn't get the camera down. So fhey stretched it out, and I'm hoping this will be the only time. I woke up in more pain than I expected, but I think it was mostly on from the gas they use. Now I'm not experiencing near as much discomfort .... hoping no one else ends up with this problem

This sounds amazing I've been craving Mexican food all week I can't wait to try it next weds.!!!

Refried Beans with a little shredded cheese have been my go to! I use a little bit of chicken broth to thin them out. Absolutely delicious. I will try FF sour cream and salsa if I get brave!!!

I am miserable! Don't get me wrong I am ecstatic to have had my surgery , i researched it and prayed for it for about 15 years, but EVERYTHING Tastes horrible to me Or I can eat it once and the next time I go back for it it makes me gag! Nourishing my body has now become my full time job and I hate it. I am sure this is part of the transition but man is it difficult. Reading about it and walking through it are two very different things!

I completely relate. Last night I had 3 ounces of cannaloni Beans with a tablespoon of pesto. It was so yummy. Today, the thought of it makes me want to puke. I am hoping it gets better the further out we get. I had my surgery 1 day after you.

I believe that our relationship with food is going to become one of eating to live and not living to eat. Much different concept for me for sure!

I didn't eat pizza tonight while everyone else was eating it! I am very proud of myself.

I have many friends that have had this and they say it can be rough for the first few months and then you will begin to enjoy things again. Things will get better guys.... we just have to go through this tough spot for a while

Mel3620,

You should be proud its a tough thing that you did.

As a good friend of mine pointed out on the subject of addictions, and i paraphrase " you DON'T need Alcohol, tabacco,or illegal drugs to sustain your body, but food is the toughest addiction to break since you MUST eat"

Im proud of your victory since i LOVE pizza but alas it is something i can no longer have. its one of my trigger foods. i would rather fit into the next size down the have a slice.

Thanks gor the post...YOUR A SUPERSTAR!!!

have a great weekend

RJ

Had my surgery 10 days ago on the 19th. As of yesterday I am down 13lbs! Woohoo! I also went back to work tonight a few days ahead of schedule. Everything went well. My back started hurting so I just took it easy. I haven't had any problems with food yet. I have been purée ing my Soups. Had some green chili vegetable that was fantastic after all the Jello and broth! Lol. I love spicy so I'm glad I didn't have any problems with it. I might try adding a slice or two of jalapeño to my chili when I purée it. I also puréed some fat free cream cheese with a cucumber from my garden and have been eating a bite of it here and there! Very refreshing. Hope everyone is doing well.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
