You should be proud its a tough thing that you did.

As a good friend of mine pointed out on the subject of addictions, and i paraphrase " you DON'T need Alcohol, tabacco,or illegal drugs to sustain your body, but food is the toughest addiction to break since you MUST eat"

Im proud of your victory since i LOVE pizza but alas it is something i can no longer have. its one of my trigger foods. i would rather fit into the next size down the have a slice.

Thanks gor the post...YOUR A SUPERSTAR!!!

have a great weekend

Thanks so much, RJ. I really appreciate the encouragement. I have teenage boys, so pizza is one of those things I will have to overcome alot!

I am also out of town this week and I am 3 weeks post op. My friend has been excellent this week. She has eaten small portions with me. Of course, hers contain a little more, but she refused the pizza as well. (Although she really doesn't need to)

I agree with your friend that food is the toughest addiction. We can overcome this! So glad we all have the support of each other.

Grits sound really good. Make sure you add some unflavored Protein to them. My NUT says that it's best to only concentrate on things with protein in them at this stage. We can eat so little that we have to maximize every protein gram.

I'm not suppose to add Protein until next week. Im thinking I'm goin to try them and just make them runny so then it's basically liquid!

It is amazing how different the surgeons are! I had Protein Shakes brought to me second day in the hospital. Then, I say go for it! It will probably be the best tablespoon of grits you have ever eaten! Lol

I agree!

I am two days post op and will be leaving the hospital in a few hours. I just showered and man that helped so much. For the most part my recovery was going very smoothly until last night. I was so nauseated and dry heaved a few times which is painful and scary. I was able to start passing gas last night' date=' which was wonderful (never thought I would be so happy to do that)!

Right now I'm scared to take in much more than Water. My full liquids start tomorrow. So I have a few questions: what should I start out with and when did you start feeling more like yourself again? Are you always scared when you move up to a new food stage?

Thanks so much!

I am a day ahead of you - surgery was Tuesday morning. Yesterday I had two Protein Shakes, 1/2 cup of Tomato Soup, and 1/4 cup of light Greek Yogurt (vanilla) and 1/4 cup of applesauce. All of the "food" was spiked with Protein Powder. I am following my clinics directions very precisely. I was able to walk about 6 blocks ( 3 different walks). I also drank 2 bottles of Propel. I feel like I am doing great. I still am a bit sore, but I have started to wean off the pain meds, plan to transition to Extra strength Tylenol over the next couple of days. My advice is to focus on protien and fluids. I should also mention that I started eating/drinking at 8 am, and did not finish until 9:30 pm. Go slow!! Good luck!!

A BM question...

I am 4 days post op. I am having gas, but no BM yet. I know I was very emptied out on Monday with the prep, but when do you get concerned if nothing materializes?

It took me a good week to actually have a BM there was nothing in my body besides Clear Liquids and I had nothing to come out ... It was all just gas.

I will bw at three weeks this wendesday and tried grits this week. I had about 2 tablespoons with an egg ( I ate the egg first). I did fine. My profession is different than yours as I started mechanical soft yesterday and will be on this for two months. Good luck!

I ended up eating 1/2 a tablespoon and I was full. Right now I'm liquid Til Weds. Then puréed for two weeks and then soft food for a month. I did fine with the grits but I made them really runny.

Baconville,

mine was approx 5 days post-op. your right since so little is in you ....well you get the picture. Also the pain meds are also contributing.

my Dr. recommended adding a Fiber mix to my shakes. that got things moving along...it worked for me

good luck, hope ever thing comes out ok......( bad pun ) :-)

It took me a little over a week, the pain meds constipated me really bad, so I was told by my team to drink Metamucil I did for two days and I stopped taking the pain meds, I been very regular ever since. Give it a little time it will move.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
