Can coughing cause a slip?

Recommended Posts

Hey all...

1 week post op now. I came down with a nasty type of cold, with post nasal drip. I'm blowing out as much as possible, but I still feel a bit of a tickle in the back of my throat. I keep having fits of coughing. I'm worried...can this make my band slip? I suppose I should get some type of OTC cough Syrup. Ugh...I hate being on all these meds!:help:

3 months ago I would have said "doubt it". But since then I've learned of a bandster whose band had to be removed, to due a slip, credited by the surgeon as being due to coughing. So I really don't know. But I wouldn't think it's anything to worry about.

Hi, I am not a Doc but isn't the band tightly stiched to the stomach wall? I would have thought that one would have to cough constantly and with strong force to dislodge/slip it. Susannah

I'd have to agree. Maybe if you were severely coughing shortly after surgery before the stitched healed...aside from that, I can't imagine that happening.

That would seem logical, but you never know. And keep in mind that not all surgeons use the same procedure to place the band.

I'm not any more "sure" than anyone else, but I would think that a cough would only cause a slip, if it was pretty much on the verge of happening anyway...

I had a cold when I was banded and was concerned he wasn't going to band me. He said that the biggest concern when you have surgery and a cold is pneumonia, and since I was having surgery on my tummy, I may be to timid to cough productively enough to remove the Fluid, hence pneumonia could develop. I asked my Dr. if I could slip the band with a cough and he said no.

Nonetheless, I tried to keep my coughing to a minimum. When I did have to cough, I held a pillow into my stomach to offer some support on my stitches. It seemed to help and allow me to cough more productively.

I am only 8 days out, so who knows. but so far I feel good!

I got a bad cold a week after being banded. I coughed and sneezed a lot. I kept a pillow at my chest because it hurt! Other than that, no problems, no slip. Take care, I hope you are feeling better soon.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
