Feeling Of Food Sitting In Throat?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm 10 weeks post op and things are going great! Although sometimes I get the feeling I have food sitting in my throat after I've had a couple of bites. It doesn't hurt or make me feel ill it's just uncomfortable.. I've only experienced it a few times (not every time I eat) I spoke to my surgeon and he said its nothing to worry about unless it happens every time I eat. I was just wondering if any one else has experienced this too? It's not happened for about 2 weeks now, so I'm hoping it's not gonna happen again :-)

Hmm... I feel that way but its everytime I eat. I'm 8 wks post op and my surgeon just put me on pureed foods. I hate the feeling of having food stuck in your throat. I always want to drink Water to make it go down but that will only further fill my pouch n make me feel sick.

Ah there's someone else who experience this, iv tried searching for the same thing online but couldn't find anything! Yer it's not a nice feeling, but

Luckily for me it doesn't happen very often. How long are you back on purée for? X

I agree with Sweet. I'm only 25 days post op and EVERYTME I eat it feels like something is in my throat a and yea although it doesn't hurt...its so uncomfortable and with me it last for hours on end. I usually just try to go to sleep and pray its gone when I wake up. My doctors told me to just try to do liquids like broth n sugar free Jello for now. I even had my throat xrayed to be certain nothing was lodged in there (it wasn't) I wonder will this ever go away. It makes me so miserable and uncomfortable

Good news anjela! I think it will go away! Lol The feeling of passing food is so much better now. I guess all we needed was time to heal. For me it was more than 8 weeks! I still occationally feel that way with foods that are too thick. So just stick to foods that are easily swallowed, and gradually move up.

Good luck! Hope you feel better :)

I am almost 4 weeks post op and ever since I was given the ok to go to soft foods I have had this problem. I get that feeling of food stuck in my throat and upper chest region. it feels like it is just sitting there. I called the doc and they said it could be from inflammation from the pouch...so they prescribed me omeprazol (I know I didn't spell that right). Ive been taking 2 a day for the last 3 days and tomorrow I start taking it once a day. Doc said that if it doesn't help than it may be a stricture from where the stomach healed too good and it pulls at the esophagus and opening of the stomach making it hard to swallow. He said they fix that by doing an upper gi where they put an endoscope down the throat and stretch out the opening of the stomach slightly allowing the esophagus to return to normal. I have had no improvement...all I know is that I'm sick of that feeling and I'm tired of just broth and Protein drinks.

If you google stomach strictures you can get more info. Hope that helps some.

Jackie you are about to make me cry bc I am having the exact same issue and I has an uppper g.i ten days ago and today and I'm scheduled for the endoscopy tomorrow morning. I was very hopeful that that would fix everything now my hopes are dashed! :'(

I haven't had the upper gi yet. That's the next step if the meds don't work. you have already had an upper GI? Did it not work? Geez.....I don't know how much longer I can go on just broth....I'm developing a food aversion to broth and shakes. It's been 5 weeks on them for me.

I think that feeling is normal, especially in the early stages. The feeling of chest pains or "food stuck" is just our bodies telling us we are now full, and need to stop eating.

I had to...all that does is look inside from a 2 dimensional view to see if there's any blockage or if your pouch is too tight. I'm sick of broth too and the Protein Shakes always make me vomit. Can you tolerate yougurt pudding Jello or applesauce? Those usually go down pretty easy. Its been 4 weeks today for me and I just REALLY can't deal!

No Sweet I don't think so bc I've had that feeling even off a sip of water....Maybe our bodies are still in the process of healing....idk but this feeling is the absolute worse. Idk how you dealt with it for 8+ weeks

I still feel that way, I just am more aware of when it happens now. It will happen if I eat or drink too fast, or if i dnt chew enough.

You guys might have a different issue Idk, but hope u guys feel better soon! I know it sucks :(

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
