Eating a lot more than I thought I would be able too!

Recommended Posts

So I just ate a whole taco from taco bell. No lectures on the fact that I shouldn't be eating taco bell please! I am 3.5 months out of surgery, I have only lost 6 lbs in the last 7 weeks and I ate a taco! For the last few weeks i have noticed that I can eat a lot more than i thought i would be able to. I was reading how some people as far out as a year could still only eat a 1/2 cup of food. Last week I ate a chicken breast for lunch, it was thin, but still I ate the whole breast. I wasn't uncomfortable afterwards. Could I have stretched my stomach out this early??

Anyone else finding that they can consume more than they thought they would be able to this early in the game?

I have also noticed I can eat more than I thought I could and I don't eat til I am uncomfortable just until my tell tale sign of small burps. Which means don't take another bite.

I haven't lost any weight in weeks.. Just fluctuating between a few lbs...

I guess the speed at which one can eat more would depend on how well the recovery process went and what size bogey was used during surgery.

I think it was about the 6 month mark where I started being able to eat more than 1/2 cup at one meal. But from what I've read, it's normal for the stomach to "relax" a little once the swelling and trauma from surgery is over.

And I have some days where it just seems like my stomach is a bottomless pit. But unlike pre-surgery, I can eat just a little and walk away. Even though I may be able to eat a cup to 1 1/2 cups of food, I still limit myself to 1/2 or 3/4 of a cup and be satisfied. That wouldn't have happened in the past. I'd have to eat until I was stuffed before I could walk away.

And I can remember when I first started being able to eat more, thinking, "OMG, I am eating soooo much." Completely forgetting the huge platefuls I used to able to eat multiple times a day.

I don't believe you have stretched your stomach out, or that it is easy to stretch your stomach - since most of the stretchy part has been removed. Just be vigilant and realize that just because you can eat more, you don't have to.

I don't think you have stretched your stomach. Just stick with the program, continue to get your Water, Protein, exercise, and calorie count, and you will probably continue to lose for a while longer.

Don't be concerned by how much your stomach can hold, but you might experiment to see if you eat smaller portions you still feel satisfied. Also one thing that I have found useful is to wait about 2 hours after eating before drinking. I find that I stay fuller for much longer when I do that. It's not an absolute rule. If I feel thirsty 30 minutes after eating I will drink something. Before I started doing that, I was waiting 30 minutes after eating, then drinking something more as a habit. It was a very easy change to make.

Yeah, some days I eat 6 bites of my chix salad and feel like I am going to explode and days like today I feel like I can eat all day! I have tried to limit my portions, but then I too feel hungry. I hate knowing that I only have a little piece of my tummy left and it's empty, LOL. I just feel like I should be losing more and doing better after what I (we all) went through. I thought I would be down a lot more by now. Even 1 lb a week would be good! But like someone else said, compared to the portions I used to eat, this is much better!

Just trying to see if others were experiencing the same thing as me!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
