March 2007 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

hey girlies... it's 8:17 p.m. and I'm on the home stretch for day one!!!!

Yippee for me..... I did have maybe a bit to much dinner, but dang it.. its the best choice of dinner that I've had for a LONG, LONG, LONG time!

I made the tuna patties and had 15 multigrain crackers to go with it... about 27 carbs for the crackers... (I should of only ate 5, but each serving were 9 carbs. Overall I'm very proud, and ready for day two...

You should be proud!!! When I eat my meal, I am having more than I should have, but I still feel good about the choices I am making. Baby steps...! You did great yesterday! Keep going...Don't Stop!!! :biggrin1:

I always start my day with coffee and SF Creamer

B - 1 hb egg

B - Dill Pickle (It was big fat and crunchy!) 2 carbs, 10 cal

B - 2 slices of thin sliced deli ham (10 slices equal 1 carb)

(NOTE: both are higher in sodium, but if I down Water it should wash it out)

Sn - Protien shake

lunch - Deli Ham

- Hunk of Sharp Cheddar

- 1 hb egg

sn - Protien shake

dinner - God HELP ME... it's Buffet night (we pick up dbf's kids and go to the local buffet restraunt)

I am really tempted to stay home....... I am being 100% honest with you all... this is gonna be hard.

wow... the time is drawing near....I'm 5 days away. I'm going shopping today for my post op list. For the 1st two days after surgery I can have liquids only:

I have to avoid

  • juice (high sugar)
  • soda
  • diet soda or anything carbonated. it's really not good for your body.

Day 3 after surgery and after fill adjustments I can have soft foods in 1/2 cup meals

I go back three week from surgery to get my 1st fill/adjustment and he said leading right up to that my appetite will return to almost normal.. this is where the greatness of the adjustable band comes in. If I get flu tummy sick and start throwing up they will get me in to take all fo the Fluid out of the band. When I'm better, they put it back in. Same thing if you get pregnant. There is no malapsorption with this procedure. I am very excited. I'm sure I'll be a wreck monday night and tuesday a.m.

I think you'll be okay if you go. I actually prefer going to buffets rather than regular restaurants when on a low carb diet because they usually have plenty of low carb options. Going to a buffet is on my schedule this weekend...but I will be eating low carb. I am still going to have my steak and crab legs before starting full liquids next Thursday!

Also, If you do go have a Protein shake before going so you don't overdo it.

Hi all! Thanks for your candid thoughts, hopes, wishes, disappointments, and committments--you are truly inspiring.

I went to my first seminar Tuesday night and was really excited (well, mostly excited:phanvan) about what I heard. Since I will be a self-payer, they said I could have the surgery within 1 month from the time I submitted my papers (which DH is doing as I type this). SO, I may be part of this great March group--if all goes well.:(

I've been on a roller coaster about this--so many thoughts and fears. When I research the data and look at this discussion group, it seems that many people never reach their goal. I wonder if their goals are unrealistic or if this really isn't the answer. I know the you can learn to "cheat" and maybe that is what is happening but why would you if you go through all this and spend all these $$$s only to end up cheating your way back? Of course, why would we regain weight time and time again without the band? Is it the same thing? I dunno.

I'm 57, been married 38 years, and have 10 amazing children (all boys but 9, lol). Now I have three incredible little grandsons and three more due this year. I want to play with my grandkids! I want to see them grow up and be at their birthdays and special occasions and not worry that I am an embarrassment to them--as well as to me and my family. I want all that enough that I think I can do the diet after the band but then I have self-doubts and wonder why I can't stick to something and lose weight without the band. I'm such a yo-yo-er. But when I commit to something, I really do it--not one "illegal" bite--until I get sick of it and go off the diet and regain all I lost and more. Will I do that again? Why or why not? :)

Ramble, ramble. Sorry folks. I AM hopeful but nervous and scared. I'm spending a big chunk of our retirement on this and have to wonder if it will be worth it. Will I be successful (and what IS success???)?

Along with other's who have posted, I am a religious person and believe God hears and answers our prayers. When I pray about this I do feel peace and the scripture in Timothy comes to my mind: God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (I'm probably paraphrasing). So I need to put the fear behind me and use my mostly sound mind to muster the power and love I have in my soul. That is my decision--to approach this with power and to feel love from my support system (DH--won't tell anyone else for now) and you-- and I'm going to do my best to stick with it.

Thanks for your great insights! If anyone has any info that would help me with my concerns (success rate, band failure, ability to maintain long-term results, etc.) I would LOVE to hear from you.

Good luck everyone!

I asked my doc basiclly the same stuff "why will this work when nothing else has?" He said this makes it so you hit a little bump in the rode on your wieght journey instead of falling off the cart and it backs over you. Thats why I'm doing it!!! I will make my mistakes little enough I can keep myself going!

Hey ThickChick, We've missed you around here. Your date is coming up soon and I know you're excited!

:welcome: momlambert, You are definitely a special lady! (10 kids...WOW!) You deserve this and more. We all worry about whether this procedure will work for us. I am so afraid that I'll be one of the ones who won't lose any weight or who struggles at losing it, but I will not be satisfied unless I try this. What is SUCCESS you say...that is a very good question. For me it does not have to be reaching my goal (although it would be nice), but for me it is to stop this constant yo-yo'ing and getting to a comfortable weight that I can maintain whether it be 220, 200 or 175. I love that Slim Fast commercial that says find your SLIM! Good Luck to You and keep us posted!

Scarlett, thanks so much because I have really been trying. I went through that eating everything phase for about a month and it will subside and if not, that's the reason we're having surgery! :biggrin1: I hope the band helps with binge eating because that is definitely one of my problems. The band and proper restriction is supposed to prevent us from over doing it.

I think the band will help me from binging!!!!!!!!!

No MORE will I be able to put away the AMOUNT of food that I can eat at one sitting! Imagine being stuffed after ONE piece of thin crust pizza... instead of eating the better part of a large (and bread sticks)

One of the hardest things for me to learn will be how to decipher a

1. Soft Stop - runny nose, hiccup

2. Hard Stop - Golf Ball Feeling or a Projectile PB

The head is going to be the hardest to overcome.......

The "wasting" of food/money.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
