I understand y they want our liver to shrink b/f surgery

Recommended Posts

I went to youtube and watched some videos of different doctors performing the operation.

That is awesome. I highly recommend it.

I understand why they want our liver to shrink w these ways of eating that we're doing. They want our liver "floppy" b/c they have to lift it up to cut one portion of the stomach. It looks like the liver covers part of the stomach that they need to get to.

Yes anatomically most people have the left lobe of the liver superior (lying above) the stomach. The more "giving" and flexible the liver the easier it is to get to the stomach. Obesity (plus diabetes, high blood lipids, and cirrhosis) lead to a "fatty" liver where the individual liver cells are swollen with glucogen. A low carb diet uses up the stores of glucogen and helps clear out the fatty deposits.

Catherine707 do you know how long this takes?

Doctor told me they want it to shrink so it would be easier to move out the way during the procedure. Makes sense.

I went to youtube and watched 4 different doctors do this procedure. It was awesome to see. They show the liver and how they lift it out of the way. You've all got to see this. It's exciting.

My best guess would be a week for someone without siginificat Fatty Liver deposits, hence the reason most surgeons require a liquid diet for a week prior to surgery. If you have a higher BMI or documented more fatty liver deposits the doctor may request a 2 or more week liquid diet.

I would ask my surgeon about this if you are concerned and follow their recommendations!

Not every surgeon requires a pre-op liver-shrinking diet. My surgeon doesn't do this for anyone, regardless of BMI, etc. He has a special tool that holds the liver out of the way during surgery. Also I think he likes to tell his patients that he thinks pre-op dieting is "mean" lol!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
