Worried about my blood sugar delaying surgery :(

Recommended Posts

I'm worried that my a1c is going to delay my surgery... I've started checking my sugars in prep for the liquid diet, and they've been running pretty high. Now my a1c is being taken on Thursday, and I'm just terrified that this will mean another surgery delay.

I know, I know, I can wait... But it doesn't mean I want to wait any more.

My doc is self admittedly OCD, and wants everything to be perfect operating conditions, but the two week liquid diet pre and post will totally reduce sugars... /cry

I guess you do realize that having your sugar in check is only for your safety during surgery. With that said, don't sweat it. I always get nervous when it's time for an A1C check & I always do well & I've even had a plate of Pasta or some ice cream within the 3 months of my testing! I don't even check my sugar because it would cause my #'s to go up if I read them each day! LOL! I just pretty much know what to stay away from, have a slip up now & then but overall, my numbers always come back 6.0 or below.

Good luck to you & be brave! Don't make your #'s climb just by being overly nervous or anxious. Everything (I'm told) affects your A1C.

It really is safer that way and you know that when your sugars are high you heal much slower..... I don't normally have high blood sugar and mine was very high after surgery. I have never had insulin and I had had 3 doses in the hospital till my body had a chill and quit producing too much sugar.

How high would your numbers be if you START with high numbers..... I know it's hard, be patient.

I am right there with you. I had my blood work done 2 weeks ago with my PCP & all my numbers are high. My A1C was 12!!! Yesterday I found out I'm approved for surgery and I have my pre-op appointment on July 11 & I'm worried about my numbers too. I'm really working on my carb loving addiction right now.

My A1C came back high so my PCP had me wait 3 months before I could consider surgery.. But I did all I was told and finally surgery is Monday!! Good luck with everything :)

I haven't yet, my a1c is on Thursday. I was told if it is above 8, surgery will be delayed, and my last a1c was a 9, so we'll see :(

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
