VSG to increase fertility?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

My husband and I have been battling infertility for almost 7 years now. My dr. told me that if I lost the weight it would help to get pregnant. I was just wondering if any of you have had success at having a baby after your VSG and how long did you wait to try?

I would also love to hear from those that have had babies after their VSG. My surgeon and gyne told me to wait 18 months before trying to conceive, and *strongly* recommended getting on birth control in the meantime, since it's been their experience that women become very fertile as they start dropping the weight. My gyne promised me as many happy, healthy babies as I wanted if I had my surgery and made my health a priority, so I hope so!

My surgeon asks that you wait at least a year before even considering trying. The weight management center tells you to to wait 2yrs until you have been maintaining your weight for a bit. The biggest reason people do the surgery is to lose the weight and keep it off and if you get pregnant too soon not only do you run the risk of not losing, but also regaining everything you may have lost. They also worry about the baby not getting enough nutrients if you get pregnant too soon. I am personally wanting 1-2 more babies but I am waiting until 1yr out to start trying. It took me 5yrs to conceive my son (whom I was told I would never be able to have) and I was told by my new OB/GYN that my weight could be a huge factor in my ability to get pregnant. Focus on you first and then getting pregnant second. You have to be healthy for that future baby yanno. I knew if I didn't do the surgery and tried to have more I'd wind up 400lbs and unable to run around and play with my kids.

Yes, it does help a lot....but you should also be very careful not to get pregnant within the first year at least. There have been plenty on here that have had baby's post op without trying at all...unless you are racing the clock I would wait until you are very close to your goal before even thinking of having a baby.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
